He needs to narrow things down so he can focus on one thing at a time instead of having all this frenetic energy causing him to bounce from partner to partner and project to project.

He's afraid that if he doesn't stand his ground at all times, people are going to walk all over him. This is why he's so stubborn and won't give anybody an inch. He needs to see that his inflexibility is a detriment to himself and that it actually is what causes him to stall and not move forward. He needs to trust his instincts about people, because most of the time, he's correct that they're trustworthy and supportive, not out to get him.
