What are your plans for the new year?

The new year is almost upon us! Are you excited? I sure am. I feel like 2018 was far too long and wayyyy too stressful, and I for one am glad that it's going to be in the past like a terrible nightmare before too long.

One thing I absolutely love about a new year is the amount of potential it brings. It's a clean slate with so much possibility – you can so much in one year that by the end of 2019, you could be a totally new and improved you. In fact, your horoscope can prove it.

Maybe you've always wanted to write a book or learn how to powerlift. Or maybe your bag is more along the lines of learning how to be more compassionate and honest with your friends and family. Whatever you want to do in the new year, now is the time to get your resolutions defined and planned out.

Setting resolutions for the new year can be daunting. We've ALL been there, even if we don't want to admit it. We buy the gym membership and only go for the first two months.

You tell yourself that you're going to be more fiscally responsible, but the minute you get paid, you're off to buy that one thing you've been thinking about since before the holiday season.

It doesn't matter how dedicated you are to your New Year's resolutions – we are all victims to our naughty brains that want nothing more than to do whatever they want without discipline. But there is a science to why we suck so bad at keeping resolutions.

I don't know about you, but knowing that there's scientific research that proves that there's a reason why I'm not the only one eating donuts after paying my monthly gym membership is a relief.

I mean, I can avoid eye contact with the cashier at Dunkin' Donuts as much as I want – I know he knows that what I'm really avoiding is the dreaded treadmill.

According to science, about 80 percent of people tend to lose motivation to stick to their New Year's resolutions after six weeks – that's only halfway through the shortest month of the year.

When we associate our resolutions with negative emotions – as in, "Ugh, I should go to the gym after work," or, "God, I have to eat salad again for dinner?" – we're less likely to want to keep up with them. replacing the word "should" with the word "will" can actually help us train our brains to want to stick with it.

And, of course, it also helps to actually make resolutions based on where your interests lie. If you want to get healthy but hate the treadmill (like me), try doing a healthy activity you can actually see yourself getting excited about, like going on a daily walk with your dog or signing up for a kickboxing class.

Both are still healthy activities, but you'll be more inclined to do them instead of going nowhere fast on the treadmill. Making New Year's resolutions should be fun, remember that. If getting your friends involved in a resolution-making party helps, then do that.

If you're skeptical about resolutions in general, make a promise to better yourself in some small way. And if you're not sure what your resolution should be, keep reading.

You'll find the 2019 New Year's resolutions for each zodiac sign, according to astrology.

ARIES (March 21 - April 19)

Aries, you are a pro at making and starting New Year's resolutions. I mean, you probably have hundreds under your belt at this point. But once March and April start looming, you find yourself losing interest in the resolutions you've made and fast.

The resolution you should make for 2019 is a promise to get things done. See a project through to the end before starting a new one. I know, it's easy to want to set one thing aside for a brand new, shiny thing.

However, this tactic does nothing for you in the long term. Even if you only accomplish one big thing in 2019, it's better than not seeing 10 other things through to the end.

TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)

Taurus, you are a very "see it to believe it" kind of person, so the New Year's resolution you choose should be something with real results, not something that makes you feel different at the end of the year. You want to know that the hard work you put into your resolution paid off.

The resolution you should make for 2019 is to invest in something. Be it a new hobby, a relationship, or your finances, use this new year to invest in something important to you.

Remember to take small, bite-sized steps, too. Nothing will turn you off to investing in the stock market or building a computer from scratch if you put all of your effort into it at the beginning of the year and let your interest fade by the middle.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)

Gemini, you love to talk, and you love to learn – so why not merge those two things and do something you'll really enjoy this new year? One thing you should definitely watch out for is getting bored. You need variety, so whatever you do should keep your interest piqued all year long.

The resolution you should make for 2019 is to learn another language. there are plenty of apps, books, movies, and sexy people from your language's country of choice to help you out with this one.

And as a reward for your hard work, plan a trip for the end of the year to that country to celebrate. If a trip isn't in your financial future, you can always invite that cute tutor over for a little celebration (wink, wink).

CANCER (June 21 - July 22)

Cancer, you crave comfort and familiarity in life. Once you have your creature comforts established, you don't feel the need to break away from the norm. This goes for your fashion sense, hobbies, and even your order at your favorite cafe.

The resolution you should make for 2019 is to get out of your comfort zone. Get your eyebrow pierced! Dye your hair purple! Sign up for skydiving or scuba lessons! I know, it can be scary to even think of changing things up, but you have a whole year of exploring to do.

Don't let 2019 become "just another year" in the life of Cancer. Having a support system is also a plus – especially when you need reassuring that purple is definitely your color.

LEO (July 23 - August 22)

You feel that, Leo? It's a brand-new year coming, and you couldn't be more excited. You absolutely love the start of a new year because it always comes with new challenges, opportunities, and potential – all the things you strive for every day.

The resolution you should make for 2019 is a promise to donate your time to a cause you care about. This might be volunteering in your community or the long journey of switching career paths, but whatever cause you choose, put your whole heart into it.

You know how to be an encouraging enthusiastic cheerleader for your friends, and 2019 is the year for you to do the same for yourself.

VIRGO (August 23 - September 22)

You're a very brains-oriented zodiac sign, Virgo, which means that you are naturally drawn to people and things that make you think. When the new year rolls around, you want to make the most of it – and work hard to be the best version of yourself that you can be.

The resolution you should make for 2019 is to learn something new. Forget about being perfect at it or following the rules – just go out there and find something cool and interesting to learn.

Having a stretch goal (something you can strive towards for the whole year) will keep you interested and motivated. Learn how to code, write a book, or take a class at your local community college. Whatever you do, enjoy yourself while doing it.

LIBRA (September 23 - October 22)

We get it, Libra, you hate confrontation. But to you, speaking your mind or sharing your opinion is akin to confrontation, which means you never speak your truth. In a world where truth is exactly what we need, it's important for you to find your voice in the new year.

The resolution you should make for 2019 is to keep it real. The whole year, practice honesty and expressing yourself. If you're mad at someone, tell them why. If you think a friend isn't making your life any better, tell them to take a hike.

Let it be known that you're not just some fashionable throw rug people can walk all over. By the end of 2019, you'll have a newfound confidence in yourself that no one will be able to take away from you.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21)

Scorpio, you never half-ass anything, so 2019 is your year to get sh*t done. You have an unmatched intensity for life that shouldn't be ignored. If anyone tells you that you're just too much for them, say, "Yes, I am," with a smile and your head held high.

The resolution you should make for 2019 is a complete transformation. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes or a butterfly breaking free of its cocoon, let 2019 be your year to transform yourself into something amazing.

Start a fitness journey, self-publish a book of your most heartfelt poetry, or vow to say yes to every opportunity you're presented with – and remember to surround yourself with like-minded people to inspire you.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21)

One of the hardest things for you when it comes to setting and keeping resolutions, Sagittarius, is the mindset that you're doing something on someone else's time (the Universe, perhaps?).

You like doing thing son your own time, in your own way, which means you often quit your resolutions before you really get started. The resolution you should make for 2019 is to broaden your horizons.

You will always be a learner at heart, so there's no need for you to put that part of you on hold in the new year. And the best way to learn is by exploring and traveling.

Make 2019 your year to explore new cultures and places, all while learning about the people you meet in the process. 2019 should be a year of fun, don't you think?

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19)

You probably already have a bunch of resolutions you're mulling over for the new year, Capricorn, but I think you should be receptive to something different for a change. You're certainly ambitious and have no trouble reaching your goals, but remember that you can have fun, too.

The resolution you should make for 2019 is to enjoy yourself. Hey, you can still work your butt off in the new year, just remember to take a break every once in a while – you deserve it, after all.

You can even mesh your ambitious nature and enjoyment, if you like. Create a start-up, invent a new product, or put your efforts into something you love – you certainly have the stamina to go big, so don't hold back!

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18)

Aquarius, you're such an out-of-the-box thinker that it would be a shame to put that aside in the new year. I have a feeling that this year is going to shock us all, so you might as well throw away the rule book, focus on your creative side, and let your freak flag fly.

The resolution you should make for 2019 is to hustle. Your day job can get a little boring from time to time, but if you know that you have a side hustle to keep you motivated, you'll really thrive this year.

Get your Etsy shop up and running, tap into your entrepreneurial side, or start an online magazine with your BFF and watch your creativity (and bank account) swell.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20)

You already know next year is going to be chaotic and crazy, Pisces – you can feel it in your bones. But knowing this now, you can stop yourself from becoming totally consumed with all of the things that don't matter once the clock strikes midnight on NYE.

The resolution you should make for 2019 is to focus on yourself. Get in touch with your spiritual and creative sides in the new year.

Whether that's through intensive meditation, creating some fabulous art pieces, or becoming the next popular yogini on Instagram. Let 2019 be your year to shed all of your worries, fears, and hang-ups and really focus on what's important: YOU.
