3 Details And Theories About An Asteroid The Size Of A House Passing VERY Close To Earth Thursday, October 12

asteroid 2012 tc4, planet earth

If you've ever wanted to have a reason to thank your lucky stars, here's one for you. Planet Earth will have a near miss with an asteroid collision on October 12th, 2017.

No, this isn't another one of David Meade's apocalyptic, end of the world schemes. However, the likelihood that an asteroid strike could cause a serious life and death situation for humans on earth is real.

Just because it's not happening this month, there are plenty of professional scientists and meteorologists working to keep our planet safe.

According to Thomas Zurbuchen, Associate Administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington, “It’s not a matter of if  but when  we will deal with such a situation".

His concerns are valid, and proven. Tiny ones hit the Earth's atmosphere daily, but a larger one has been threatening to strike. It's made one round, and now, it's coming towards us again, for the second time in less than 5 years.

Discovered in 2012, asteroid 2012 TC4 was first spotted whizzing by planet Earth when it was less than 1/3rd the distance between planet Earth and the Moon.

Although this rock mass is only 30 to 100 feet in wide, it's still kind of scary to think that perhaps a constellation out in the universe is playing toss and we might be the bull's eye.

Paul Chodas, manager of the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California assures the planet, “We know the orbit of 2012 TC4 well enough to be certain that it won’t hit Earth”.

For this, we should all be thankful. The last asteroid to hit planet earth struck Russia in 1908 in Tunguska was only 70 feet wide which is measurably smaller than 2012 TC4.

But it's not always the size of the asteroid (or meteorite) that matters.

It's the velocity of the hit when striking planet earth. The sound could be heard over 1000 miles away and released 15 megatons of energy. 1000+ times energy of Hiroshima's explosion in Japan, according to asteroid hunter and Senior Research Scientist, Donald Yeomans, at JPL at NASA in an interview with the History Channel.

In 2013, another meteor exploded over a Russian city also created significant damage.

It's good to know that this one is expected to be distant enough to avoid an unwanted explosion, but the prediction of how much skin we have left from the fly-by is uncertain.

In case you're wondering why you're just now hearing about this and what's the plan is to protect your well-being, here are 3 essential facts, rumors, and scary details about Asteroid 2012 TC4 that will just miss hitting planet Earth on Thursday, October 12th:

1. It's rumored that NASA has a planetary defense system to strike potential meteor threats to planet earth.

When 2012 TC4 was first discovered, NASA, DOD, and JPL began discussing a need for a planetary defense system which will be tested on October 12th, 2017.

The plan to create this defense system was not as a result of 2012 sighting but from the 2013 asteroid that came into the Earth's atmosphere in 2013.

The truth is that meteorites and asteroids hit our atmosphere daily. To find out about impact risks visit NASA's Earth Impact Monitoring System HERE.

2. Some think that NASA has been hiding things.

There are YouTubers (not that these guys are true subject matter experts, but people do believe them) and community site members on forums who have speculated that Niburu conspiracy theorists may be right and that 2012TC4 is a real threat being hidden from humans.

These claims are false. Not only have some of the facts were distorted but NASA and other space organizations claim the odds of a strike on Thursday is 1:1 million.

3. Doomsday Christian apocalyptic theorists say this is a sign of the end  again.

Yes, there are signs of the end times talked about in the Bible, but again, let's be reasonable. Scientists have proven that these things happen every day in a smaller form.

In fact, this year alone there will be 21 meteor showers near planet earth, and two of them will take place this month and last until November 5th, 2017.

Breathe easy. Get your telescope out, or watch the event happening on the live stream. But whatever you do, don't panic.
