When Mercury moves into Capricorn on December 28th, we get a dose of realism, changing the way that we think, communicate and even strategize our plans. For the zodiac signs, it's a welcome change after putting up with struggles for the last few months.

In astrology, Mercury is the planet of communication, so when he changes signs, we tend to also feel its effects within our own process and ideas.

This planet has been the center of attention since he shifted into Scorpio back in the beginning of October for two months, including a very intense and deep retrograde. As we neared December 9th, we were all ready for a shift, and this time it was into Sagittarius for a very brief time period before resuming his more traditional rotation through the signs.

Mercury will be in Capricorn until January 16th, meaning this energy will help us start off our New Year!

While we will nearly escape a stellium in Capricorn, meaning that five or more planets congregate into one sign at a time, we’re still seeing a lot of this earth energy show up in our lives this month, including Venus in Capricorn, Jupiter moving into Capricorn, and our new moon and Solar Eclipse in this sign around the 26th.

While it’s normal to see this energy around this time of year, it's starting a bit earlier and is more widespread. Capricorn energy is well timed for starting the New Year because it’s about working hard for what we want.

Capricorn is methodical and usually has a very grounded approach to things, instead of rushing in passionately or becoming impatient because he wants what he wants now; instead, Capricorn can look and appreciate a timeline. He doesn’t mind waiting for gratification and will delight in knowing that he’s doing things as he’s meant to, slowly working his way to fulfillment.

Capricorn energy is one that lets us also let go of things that didn’t work out in the past. Whether it’s a life path, a career or relationship, we’re able to leave the past where it is and approach our present and future with clear eyes.

This is also about letting go of pain or trauma we’ve experienced, ready to trust again and see life through fresh eyes. We can’t continually move forward in life if we only ever carry what we’ve been through. We get heavy. We feel weighed down, burdened. Instead, we must release, let go and accept that while the past had to occur as it did, it doesn’t mean it can’t also be completely different.

With quite literally a Mercury frame of mind, we’ll be feeling clear-headed and rational. This will enable us to be more pragmatic — not just in releasing what we no longer need to carry, but also in terms of making plans for our future.

The energy of December is that we’ve been feeling this energy of new beginnings prior to the New Year. It’s been a time not just of reflection but in new chapters and direction. We’ve been shifting into this place of feeling ready to move on in a very different way we have before.

This isn’t moving on, but just continuing our same patterns or self-limiting beliefs. This is the total upending of how we’ve lived our lives for the last few decades, completely ready, open, and trusting for whatever comes next.

We must be wary of Capricorn not worrying too much about hurting feelings or saying things in the "right" way, which means we could unintentionally be blunter than we normally would. In many ways, this is a benefit because so many times in life, we censor ourselves because of how we believe others will take what we say. In that process, we will put preferential treatment on the feelings or reactions of others instead of expressing our truth.

The Capricorn zodiac sign speaks plainly and truthfully. There's no dressing up words or sugarcoating the truth; it’s just the simple statement of what we feel or want.

Capricorn can see the long-term plan better than almost any other sign, which is just one reason why it’s such a patient sign when it comes to seeing his plans come to fruition. For us, this is a huge asset because even if we must drop some unwelcoming news on someone or go through hard times, it doesn’t mean it's not worth it.

It’s been a difficult few months for most. Even if there were amazing moments, there was an intensity to it that was emotionally exhausting. We felt as if it was important, big, like we were in some process, even if we didn’t have any idea what it was.

Mercury was the leader of the movement, asking us to delve deep into what we previously wanted to ignore or deny. He asked us to go through the discomfort, to sit with what we were feeling, to acknowledge it and then learn from it.

But now, this is the time of action. To put all of it into place and to make those different plans. While Capricorn specifically deals with life paths or career, because this is centering around the eclipse energy, there is also a romantic component, especially if we’ve been feeling changes coming in that arena for some time.

For us, this Mercury in Capricorn energy will allow us to think more logically about our relationships and say what needs to be said, which means that while many wait until after New Year's to break up, this year, we’ll be less likely to.

To make the most of this energy, we must be in the place to accept that it’s time to move forward. To accept that mistakes happen, hard times happen, but that doesn’t mean life isn’t also amazing or beautiful.

It only means that it’s all in balance, and no matter how hard we try, nothing will ever be perfect. But that doesn’t mean we should let that deter us from making the most of each moment.
