Where Will Love Take You? Take Ideas From The Old Experts

Who says romance is DEAD?! Learn from the old fashion romance experts and plan your romantic trip!

Do you think you’re the king or queen of romance? You might need a little history lesson for perspective. Couples have long turned to romantic getaways and retreats for a little peace, quiet, and TLCand we’re not talking about a weekend at the Best Western. We’re talking about historic castles on the Black Sea and private islands with views fit for royalty.

Romantic Retreats Then

Romance is nothing new, and you could argue that preceding generations were better at wooing and romancing than we are today. Just take a look at two of the most romantic retreats in history:

Kellie’s Castle, Malaysia. According to the story, Kellie’s castle is the oldest structure in Malaysia. It’s found in Batu Gajah and was built by William Kellie Smith when he realized that his pregnant bride, Agnes, missed Scotland. Unable to return to Scotland, Smith built this hilltop home to remind her of their roots. Unfortunately, Smith died prematurely in 1926, and construction was never completed. However, that doesn’t diminish his romantic efforts to please his wife.

Boldt Castle, New York. Found on Heart Island in New York, Boldt Castle was originally commissioned by George C. Boldt in 1900. The wealthy hotelier did so as a symbol of his love and affection for his wife. The plan was to build a five-acre estate, with more than 10 buildings and beautiful gardens. His idea was to present it to his wife on Valentine’s Day, 1905, but the death of his wife in 1904 halted construction. Unlike Kellie’s Castle, this one was eventually completed and now serves as a popular wedding venue. As a result, Housing.com named it one of the five most amazing monuments in the name of love.

Romantic Retreats Now

You may not have the funds to build a castle or to develop an island for your significant other, but that shouldn’t stop you from planning a romantic vacation. Here are some ideas:

Jamaica Inn, Ocho Rios, Jamaica. With 48 individual suites, private pools, ocean access, and a strict no-electronics policy, the Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios is a beautiful oasis. It’s been serving couples since 1950 (including Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe) and frequently houses wealthy romantics from all around the world.

Belmond Hotel Cipriani, Venice, Italy. If it’s good enough for George Clooney’s wedding guests, it’s probably good enough for you. This hotel is a four-minute private boat ride away from San Marco, yet it's incredibly quiet and romantic. It’s on the tip of Giudecca Island and has anything you could possibly want or need.

Fowl Cay Resort, Exumas, Bahamas. The fact that it’s located near Johnny Depp’s private island should tell you all you need to know, but the Fowl Cay Resort is one of the most romantic getaways in the western hemisphere. The water is clear, the sand is white, and the island is virtually unpopulated.

Plan Your Next Getaway

Where will you go on your next romantic getaway? It doesn’t have to be as grand as Belmond Hotel Cipriani, or as breathtaking as Boldt Castle, but find somewhere special, and plan a trip. As they say, it’s the thought that matters, and your significant other will surely appreciate this romantic gesture.
