Prince Charles Will Walk Meghan Down The Aisle — And This Isn't The First Time He's Stepped Up

It's never been done before in royal history.

Prince Charles stepped up last minute to walk his future daughter-in-law Meghan Markle down the aisle Saturday after her father announced he is unable to attend the royal wedding.

Markle is set to wed Prince Harry on Saturday and has asked his father, Prince Charles, to take her father’s place during the ceremony.

“Ms. Markle has asked His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales to accompany her down the aisle of the Quire of St. George’s Chapel on her Wedding Day. The Prince of Wales is pleased to be able to welcome Ms. Markle to The Royal Family in this way,” the official statement from Kensington Palace reads.

Markle has spent plenty of time with Prince Charles throughout her relationship with Prince Harry and the two have acquired quite a bond, a source told The Telegraph.

This isn’t the first time Markle’s soon-to-be father in law has accompanies a royal down the aisle.

The Prince of Wales stepped up to walk Alexandra Knatchbull, a goddaughter of the late Princess Diana, down the aisle in 2016 when she married Thomas Hooper. Her estranged father watched from the audience, CNN reports.

Prince Charles said he is happy to escort Ms. Markle on her wedding day.

Markle is also preparing to make a bold feminist statement at her own wedding.

According to CNN, the soon-to-be royal will walk unescorted down the first half of the aisle, which has never been done before in the family’s royal history. She has also decided not to be given away.

The decision not to be chaperoned was reportedly her own. Markle seems to want the public to know she isn’t afraid to challenge tradition and wants to be viewed as a strong and independent woman as she joins the royal family Saturday.

Even before her father, Thomas Markle, opted not to attend his daughter’s wedding, she planned on walking most of the aisle alone, the news outlet reports.

On Thursday Markle announced that her father will not be attending the wedding due to health issues. He suffered a heart attack last week and was advised by doctors not to travel. He also stated that he did not want to cause further embarrassment to the royal family after a recent paparazzi stint, according to TMZ

“Sadly, my father will not be attending our wedding. I have always cared for my father and hope he can be given the space he needs to focus on his health,” she announced.

Although her father is unable to be there to give her away on her big day, Markle is excited for Saturday.

“I would like to thank everyone who has offered generous messages of support,” she announced. “Please know how much Harry and I look forward to sharing our special day with you on Saturday.”
