How Each Zodiac Sign Feels In Their Deepest, Darkest Times

getty Dark times. You might say we're living through them right now. The general atmosphere is filled with doom, terror and fear. Face it: it's dark out there. And overcoming adversity of this kind should be nothing new to the depressed zodiac signs; in fact, it's what your horoscope frequently warns you against.
And why that's rough on all of us is because we also experience our own deeply personal darkness, and the pain of it is not necessarily something we share with others or that astrology reveals so clearly. Sometimes, depression can enter our lives for one reason or another, and before we know it, we're sunken, void of excitement and self-destructive.
There's a darkness within us all, and some of us are able to use it's transformative energy to better ourselves, while others cannot fight the darkness no matter how hard they try.
And yes, we are born into these human packages, completely unprepared for the darkest of times or how to battle them and protect ourselves. What we have in common is darkness; what we have individually is the way we handle the darkness within us.
Each sign of the zodiac feels different during times of duress. And when the dark hits us, depending on when we were born, we process our anxiety or self-destruction accordingly. Here's how the depressed zodiac signs handle their inner demons.
ARIES (March 21 - April 19)
When down, Aries plummets. Generally, this sign is one of the most optimistic of them all, yet when that personal funk comes to town, Aries becomes a terrible doomsayer; they cannot see the forest for the trees, and when they feel lost in the dark, they tend to feel all is not only hopeless, but not worth anything right from the very start.
They are the quintessential "throw the baby out with the bathwater" people. If it sucks in their minds, it sucks everywhere, and there's no convincing them of otherwise.
TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)
It's almost impossible to cheer a Taurus up when they've hit the dark place. While they are open to a bit of good cheer, it might take you a lifetime to actually give them what they want.
And what they want is hope, because to a Taurus, hope is what keeps them alive, and the lack of it is an invitation to such self-destruction and depression, that they spend much time looking for distractions — anything to keep them from falling into that black hole again.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)
Geminis tend to fall pretty hard into dark states of mind, and by "dark," we really are talking about depression. There's a resigned hopelessness that accompanies the dark Gemini throughout their life journey, and though they can usually snap back and become the life of the party, these folks give new meaning to "tears of a clown."
They mask their darkness with laughter, and in order to battle of world of depressing prospects, they take the stage like a stand up comic.
CANCER (June 21 - July 22)
Cancer's darkness can be so overwhelming for them that they actually become bitter because of it. They start out with such good intentions, but as life does what it does, they start to pine for their losses in a way that is unhealthy and unwise.
Cancer wants to be happy so badly that when they notice they aren't, they become horrified over the wrong turns they made in their lives to become who they are today. Cancer wants to be happy and anything less becomes part of a large, dark pit of emptiness for them.
LEO (July 23 - August 22)
With such sunny dispositions, one would think Leo would be able to weather the storm of dark depression rather well, but alas, this is not the case. Leo, being hyper-sensitive to just about everyone and all things, has a built-in mechanism that sets off every time they believe they've failed someone.
If you are in an argument with Leo, you might think your dynamic Leo friend would be thrilled to win that argument. You'd be right, but here's the odd part: Leo doesn't want to win if it upsets you. Part of what keeps them shining in the light is the ability to make everyone happy, so when they don't, they sink into dark, dark despair.
VIRGO (August 23 - September 22)
Virgo does not take the darkness well. Oh, they may enjoy the subversive nature of the depressed state, but these people go from zero to sixty when it comes to allowing themselves to plummet into misery and depression.
Perhaps it's their way of expressing themselves; they are unfit for repression, and during the dark times, this group absolutely must get their pain out of their system. To their benefit, they are able to deal with darkness easily due to their ability to let it all out in expression.
LIBRA (September 23 - October 22)
Libra is a silent sufferer, and the dark is quite harsh among this zodiac sign. Known for their kind natured ways, they are also high on the list for repression: they avoid confrontation at all cost, they do NOT speak up and say what's on their minds, and honestly, they lie a lot.
When you lie, you have to keep track, and that makes you confused and filled with anxiety. Libra is an anxious type, and all that holding in of emotion is what eventually takes them all the way down.
SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21)
Scorpio was born dark, and they tend to stay that way all of their lives. This group of people take their darkness and make it work for them. That's not to say they don't experience the downside of the darkness; in fact, Scorpios make up many of the depressed people out there today.
They simply have found built in coping skills, and yes, some of those skills involve treating others badly; it's not that they want to be malicious to others, it's that it alleviates their own pain, and well, c'est la vie, eh?
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21)
For the most optimistic sign of the Zodiac, Sagittarius has a true headlock on depression and darkness. Being that they've spent all of their lives in their minds, they are unaccustomed to the ways of the real world, and so when something extraordinarily wrong hits them, they have no idea what to do because they are not equipped for reality.
They might retreat into one of their invisible worlds with all their invisible friends, but once they let the real world in, their only recourse is to plunge into the pit of sadness and despair.
CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19)
Capricorn was born depressed, and each and every day of their lives is spent conquering the darkness within. They seem to have tremendous family issues, and always they are compromised by this.
Whether it concerns doing what they want and having their dream continuously thwarted, or believing in themselves only to have their dream dashed in someone's wake up call of cruel words. Capricorn tries and tries — they are valiant players and they mean well. But when the dark hits, it's business as usual for our goat friends.
AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18)
Prone to depression, Aquarius is stoic but always on the verge of a nervous breakdown. These are the people who hold it in, show a stiff upper lip and brave face... and then the second they are alone, out come the water works. Big criers, this bunch. All that water bearing, I guess.
The thing is, they take on huge responsibilities. Being important and doing important things is prime to Aquarius, and so when their plans don't work out as expected, it's like a heinous affront. And like any game of dominos, once one plan fails, they all come down in succession. Aquarius falls apart over failure.
PISCES (February 19 - March 20)
Nervous to the core is the Pisces who lives on earth in this day and age. Naturally skittish, Pisces is the first on line for the extra large helpings of dark depression. As the most sensitive and perhaps hyper people of the Zodiac, they're basically just bodies waiting around to be filled with dread. They love it.
Well, they must love it because they invite dreaded situations into their lives at every chance they get. Also big criers, Pisces is at home while weeping, and so they nurture their dark side because expressing it for them is just too much fun to not share.
