getty For some people, making new friends is as easy as going up to a stranger and starting a conversation with them; others find it to be a scary ordeal. Often, it’s our zodiac signs that help determine how we approach new friendships.
But the art of how to make new friends also involves having a positive mindset, being open to new types of people, and taking the steps to form friendships.
Astrology aside, you have to be willing to take a chance and put yourself out there.
No one enjoys rejection and it can be intimidating to invite a potential new friend to spend time with you, but the rewards are great.
Humans are social animals and we need to have people we can talk to, do activities with, and know they support us. The encouragement from a friend can be exactly what you need to pursue your dreams and goals. And in the same way your friend is there for you, you need to be there for them.
ARIES (March 21 - April 19)
While Aries have the kind of personality that makes friends easily, they don't always have the time to go to a meet-up or take a class.
They are good at using the resources they already have, so when they need to make new friends, they tend to get to know their friend's friends. That way, they always have something to talk about — their mutual friend and the new friend is vetted.
TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)
When a Taurus wants or needs some new friends, they do something similar to Aries, but instead of getting to know a friend's friend, Taurus reaches out to acquaintances, friends they lost touch with, or people they're friendly with but never attempted to be friends with — neighbors, people they see at the gym.
Taurus will reach out and set up a coffee date, or do something they both enjoy, like a wine tasting or a foot massage.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)
Geminis love to socialize, so when they're looking for new friends, they're going to use their social skills and go to a party or event. They are very good at connecting with people and having real conversations, even when everyone around them is only engaging in small talk.
Geminis are smart, funny, and they'll leave a social event with a few new friends. All they have to do is follow up with the people they met, and they have a whole new squad of friends.
CANCER (June 21 - July 22)
When Cancer needs a new friend, they tend to turn to groups of people they're already involved with — people in their family, people from their church, or maybe even an ex or two. Once a connection has been formed, it's very difficult for Cancer to let it go.
Cancers still care about their ex, and their ex still cares about them, so why shouldn't they be friends? Whatever they liked about each other when they were together is something they can build on.
LEO (July 23 - August 22)
Rather than making new friends, the challenge would be for Leo not to make new friends. Everywhere Leo goes they connect with people, and if they want to pursue a friendship, they'll know exactly what to do to make it go from a friendly encounter to a solid friendship.
They like people, and people respond favorably to that. A Leo might go to a bar or club and come out with three new friends. They are captivating and are hard to resist if they want you in their life.
VIRGO (August 23 - September 22)
As with most things, if Virgo needs new friends, they're going to do the research and find out the best thing to do. Since they tend to relentlessly pursue knowledge, Virgo will sign up for a class or workshop and make friends with one of the other students.
A course is one way to guarantee you'll meet people with shared interests. Plus, a class is a good way for Virgo to show how much they know and how educated they are.
LIBRA (September 23 - October 22)
When looking for new friends, Libra will turn to the arts — either taking a cooking or painting class, or auditioning for a play or comedy group. They need to connect with people who share their love of art and performance.
They try to be open-minded and not judge. If someone doesn't appear to be a person Libra would be friends with, this zodiac sign gets to know them and not make a snap judgment.
SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21)
When Scorpio wants to make a new friend, they go online. They can meet people on discussion forums or commenters on their blogs. Scorpios will also use friend-seeking apps like Bumble and Meetup.
Using an app is an efficient way to connect with people while getting a sampling of their personality from their profile. While you may find out there's no friend chemistry when you meet, you don't have to invest a lot in finding that out.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21)
Sagittarius often meets people traveling or just being away from home. They're good about making the first step and will take the initiative to start a conversation.
They are very interested in learning about someone else and will ask non-threatening questions that require more than a yes or no answer. Making new friends is one of Sagittarius' major life skills. They're not shy and can always find something in common with anyone.
CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19)
When Capricorn wants to make new friends, they'll join meet-up groups. There are so many different kinds, and if one doesn't work out for Capricorn, they'll find one that does.
A meet-up group also helps them do something they may have been putting off, like pursuing a new hobby or learning a new skill. It could be a hikers meet-up group, a writer's group, or Harry Potter fans group. It's very easy to quickly bond with someone who shares your passions.
AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18)
Aquarians tend to have a lot of friends, but people lead busy lives, so there may be times when they feel lonely. When Aquarius needs a new friend, they will usually meet them while volunteering.
Since they are passionate about helping people, animals, and the environment, they feel best when they're working for a great cause. Meeting people is only one of the benefits of doing something for others. If you can help make things better and make new friends, why wouldn't you?
