3 Cringe-y Things You Never Knew About HGTV Fixer Upper Stars Chip And Joanna Gaines’ Relationship, Including Their Arrest Warrant

Chip and Joanna Gaines relationship details

Debt, arrest warrants, and much, much more.

What time is the Fixer Upper finale on HGTV? We can hardly believe it, but the final episode of Fixer Upper airs Tuesday at 9:00 p.m. EST on HGTV. And stars Chip Gaines and Joanna Gaines and their four kids (soon to be five!) have seemed to have had all the makings of a perfect power couple and family — especially in the eyes of their many fans. Their super-popular home remodeling show made them stars in the city of Waco, Texas — and around the world — and drew fans to their loving, close-knit family. Besides the appeal of the remodeling TV show, people seemed to love the couple for their down-to-earth persona.

But it wasn't all stars and stripes from the beginning. We dug up three of the strangest, lesser-known details surrounding Chip and Joanna Gaines' relationship that you might not know, unless you're a true HGTV Fixer Upper superfan.

1. They've had warrants out for their arrests.

Joanna had a warrant out for her arrest in 2016, which she documented extensively in the couple's book, The Magnolia Story. Back then, the couple owned three dogs, which they had been allowing to walk around their neighborhood by themselves. Their neighbor across the street was annoyed by the pups and eventually notified animal authorities about it.

Perhaps the strangest part of this incident was that both Chip and Joanna were well aware of the complaints and the fines that went with them. But neither of them ever did anything about solving it until police showed up and arrested Chip after he switched the warrant into his name so that Joanna — who was pregnant at the time — wouldn't have to go to jail. Chip himself even made the following statements indicating both he and Joanna definitely knew about the complaints. "Every single time she saw them off the leash — which was just about all the time — she called animal control,” said Chip. “The people from the pound would show up, haul the dogs downtown in their van, and write us a ticket either in Jo’s name or my name.”

Chip was eventually released on bail.

2. They're millionaires now...but they used to have serious financial problems.

In 2012, the pair had a lawsuit against them for not paying their property taxes in the year 2010. The couple owed a whopping $13,000 and change — and that was hardly the end of Chip and Joanna's money issues. In 2017, Chip was sued by his former real estate partners for more than a million dollars. Chip's two partners filed a lawsuit stating that Chip was trying to cheat them out of their business and buy out their shares. The lawsuit stated that Chip knew how popular and successful Fixer Upper had become and decided that he wanted to be the only one to profit from it out of his business partners.

The lawsuit situation turned into a completely different territory after Chip sent threatening text messages to one of his former partners. "You better tell Rick to be careful," Gaines allegedly texted Lewis. "I don't come from the nerdy prep school he's from. And when people talk to me that way, they get their (expletives) kicked. And if he's not ready to do that, he better shut his mouth. I'm not the toughest guy there is, but I can assure you that would not end well for Rick."

The lawsuit ended up being dismissed.

3. Chip & Joanna almost didn't get together at all.

In the couple's memoir, Joanna revealed rather strange tidbits about the beginning of the couple's relationship. She said that on their first date, Chip was an hour and a half late. She also added that he didn't even apologize for his lateness. Despite all of this, the couple did go on a second date but that date wasn't until several months later! Chip claimed this was because he made a deal with his roommate to see who could hold out the longest on getting in touch with each other. "I really wanted that $50 from John! That's the only reason I didn't call."

Not exactly the most romantic start to a relationship, but it seems to have worked out quite nicely for them.
