Who Is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez? New Details About Congressional Democratic Candidate New York Primary Beat Joseph Crowley
Buzz

The Bronx-born Latina has worked with Bernie Sanders and Ted Kennedy.

The current state of politics in the United States has left many of us feeling divided and jaded, but the good news is that there is a new, young candidate running for the United States Congress that embodies a hopeful future.

Her name is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

On June 26, Ocasio-Cortez, a native of the Bronx, shook up the democratic party when she won the primary against one of the top Democrats in the country.

Her opponent was Joseph Crowley, a longtime member of the U.S. House of Representatives for New York's 14th District. Crowley hasn't even faced a primary challenger in over a decade.

The contested New York district includes the Bronx and Queens, and Ocasio-Cortez's campaign message resonated with those looking to change up leadership in the party.

She came along as a fresh face with unapologetic views, who not only represented the growing diversity in the American population but also the desire for more younger Americans to be involved in politics.

During a live on-air debate, she called out Crowley on his lack of action on issues like ICE and the immigration crisis. Her campaign video also criticized the Democratic incumbent on taking corporate money, profiting off foreclosure, not living in New York City and also not sending his kids to school there either.

Crowley's campaign had spent over one million dollars. In contrast, Ocasio-Cortez had taken small donations to finally raise up to $300,000, proving that the new wave of progressive politics isn't about how much money you have but the message that your campaign conveys to voters.

Now that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has won her district's primary, she will be going up against the Republican candidate Anthony Pappas in the general election this coming November.

Until then, read up on these inspiring details about the democratic candidate running for New York's 14th District that will leave you feeling a little more hopeful this election year:

1. She is only 28 years old.

At just 28 years old, Alexandria is a voice for the younger generation that is drastically un-represented in Congress.

Now that she has won her district's primary, she is moving forward to go up against the Republican candidate in the midterms this November. If she wins, she will become the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.

2. She has worked for Bernie Sanders and Ted Kennedy.

Although this is Alexandria's first run as an official candidate, this is not her first experience in the political scene.

Prior to her run, Alexandria was an organizer for Bernie Sanders and his campaign during the Vermont senator's run for President back in 2016. During her time in college at Boston University where she studied economics and international relations, Alexandria was also an intern for the late Senator Ted Kennedy.

Although she interned for Kennedy, she did not connect with establishment politics and as a candidate, has mirrored senator Sanders in focusing on a grassroots campaign.

3. She is a progressive champion.

Alexandria has stated that, like Bernie Sanders, she is a Democratic Socialist.

During a recent interview on The View Alexandria went on to further describe what being a democratic socialist means to her. The democratic candidate said: "I believe that in a moral and wealthy America — in a moral and modern America — no person should be too poor to live in this country."

Two major issues that she advocates for is healthcare for all and tuition-free public college.

4. She comes from a working-class background.

In her campaign video, Alexandria opens by saying "Women like me aren't supposed to run for office".

A major component of Alexandria's appeal is that she doesn't come from a wealthy or powerful family. She is just like us and understands the struggle that working-class Americans are going through. Prior to her campaign run, Alexandria had been waiting tables, bartending, and working different jobs to help support her mother.

5. She is a proud Latina.

Alexandria's mother hails from Puerto Rico and her father from the Bronx.

Her official campaign posters even feature a clever tribute to her Latina roots with the upside down exclamation mark that is used in the Spanish language. As a Latina though, Alexandria not only represents the diversity of her New York district, but also the need for more diversity in Congress.
