When rumors aren’t circulating that he’s the Zodiac Killer, Ted Cruz is the junior United States Senator from Texas, a position he’s held since 2013.

He’s facing some stiff competition in the midterm elections against Democratic opponent Beto O’Rourke, but he’s used to close political campaigns like this. Remember when he was a candidate for the 2016 presidential election?

Though he’s constantly in the spotlight making comments about abortion, “Christian terrorism,” and mass shootings, we have to wonder what his personal life is like? What does his family think of his former presidential campaign and his bid for reelection? Who is Ted Cruz’s wife? Here are 9 things to know about Heidi Cruz and their relationship.

1. She grew up traveling the world.

As a child, she lived in Kenya, Nigeria, and Asia, where her parents were missionaries and assisted people in those areas with dental health. But after she no longer traveled with her family, she received a Bachelor’s in Economics and International Relationships from Claremont McKenna College.

She then received a Masters of European Business degree from Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management in Brussels, and a second graduate degree from Harvard Business School.

2. She worked as an investment manager.

She worked for multiple investment banks, including Chase, Merrill Lynch, and Goldman Sachs. In 2005, she became a private wealth manager and was promoted to Houston’s regional head of the Southwest United States for the Investment Management Division seven years later.

3. But she has plenty of other experience.

Cruz was the economic director for the Western Hemisphere at the National Security Council for president George W. Bush, the director of the Latin America Office at the U.S. Treasury Department, and as Special Assistant to U.S. Trade Representative Robert B. Zoellick. She also worked for Condoleezza Rice as an investment banker. According to a New York Times interview, she cherished her job and found it to be “personally fulfilling.”

4. They met while working on George Bush’s 2000 presidential campaign.

In 2000, while working for Bush’s campaign, the now-married couple worked just three cubicles apart. At the time, she was working as an economic policy director for the campaign. It’s clear their values aligned, and the rest is history.

5. They lived apart for 7 years after they married.

The couple wed in 2001, but until 2008, they didn’t live together, as Cruz was focusing on his political career. He took a job in Austin, while Heidi remained in Washington, DC. She eventually moved to Texas but was in Houston, and the couple had to take turns traveling three hours to see each other on the weekends. In 2010, they finally moved in together in Houston.

6. They have two children.

The Cruzs have two daughters, Caroline and Catherine.

7. She played a big role in his campaign.

From moving to Texas to following him on the road before and after his presidential campaign, she seems like a wife any man would be lucky to have. In 2016, when Cruz announced his run for president, she left her position at Goldman Sachs to help. She made many public appearances to vouch for Cruz, and attended debates.

During the early stages of the campaign, she became a fundraiser and made calls to donors, a skill she learned as an investment banker. She also rallied for her husband ahead of the Iowa caucus, and made stops in New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina. She also campaigned in Texas, which Cruz won during the primaries.

8. She converted for him.

Heidi was raised a Seventh-day Adventist, but converted to a Southern Baptist along with her husband. She’s a vegetarian, maintaining values from her former denomination.

9. She bears a striking resemblance to Jennifer Coolidge.

See for yourself.
