Liam has allegedly sought legal advice.

Rumor has it One Direction’s Liam Payne and girlfriend Cheryl Ann Tweedy may be going separate ways just a year after their son was born.

An insider told Daily Mail their relationship was “under strain” because they were apart so often due to their busy schedules. They have not been seen together in public since October.

“This relationship is hanging by a thread,” a source close to Liam told the publication. “Both of them are devastated.”

Liam and Cheryl’s romance began in 2016 and their baby boy, Bear, was born 12 months ago. Both celebrities have had increasingly hectic schedules and it may be the reason they are thinking of throwing in the towel on their relationship.

“It’s very sad — they tried very hard to make it work,” the source said. “They’re desperate to make a go of it but it’s absolutely on the rocks.”

Liam’s solo career has taken off and he has been away a lot as he tours the U.S. and promotes his new single with Rita Ora. Friends said Cheryl is left to take care of Bear and it has caused some tension between the couple.

An insider said that they have both been working hard to reduce their time away from each other. Liam even opted to hire a private jet rather than travel on commercial planes to make it easier to spend time with Cheryl.

“It’s very difficult for them and extremely sad. Things go from being very calm to being very tough,a source close to Liam told Daily Mail. “The crux of the problem is that Liam has to be away a lot. Cheryl has always understood he would have to work hard and be absent but the reality is that it’s not an easy thing to deal with.”

A source close to the pair said if it weren’t for Bear they probably would have split.

“There’s a big age gap between them. If they didn’t have Bear then they would have most likely split up by now,” the source told The Sun. “But they love their son. And they do care for each other so it’s now a matter of seeing if there’s a final way forward to try and make it work.”

Cheryl, 34 and Liam, 24, first met in 2009 when he auditioned for X-Factor, where Cheryl was a judge.

“They love their little baby Bear Payne and are truly over the moon and loving being parents for the first time together,” a source explained to The Sun.

Liam has sought legal advice to protect his $54 million fortune and his rights to see his son if he and Cheryl decide to part ways.

"With a young son and a number of assets between them there is more to breaking up than just parting ways,” a source close to the couple told The Sun. “He hopes it doesn’t come to it but he’s just being careful.”

Celebrity breakups are no easy task and there is a lot to take into consideration, especially now that they share a child.

“Liam has sought some legal advice but he still wants to make it work,” the source continued.
