Double whammy time!

As I write this article on the first day of spring, things are lovely, cheerful, and precious. It's the perfect time of year for people with a happy love life to enjoy their blossoming romantic relationships.

Sure, a snow storm appears to be on course to crush New York City (the land where I live), and sure, I could use more sleep and less stress, but you know what? Things could be worse. You know, like when Mercury is retrograde, for example. Or on April Fools' Day. Or — nah, it couldn't happen — when April Fools' Day coincides with Mercury being in retrograde ...

Hold onto that thought, because I have some tough news for you: Mercury goes retrograde for the first of three times this year on Friday, March 22, 2018, and it stays there until it goes direct again on April 15.

When Mercury is retrograde, it appears to move backward in its own orbit. According to astronomers however, that this is actually an optical illusion.

Science explains the astrological event known as Mercury retrograde like this:

"Finding the facts about Mercury's retrograde motion is complicated because it's both a real and imagined phenomenon ... [If] a person were able to trace Mercury's position during retrograde — which is a challenge, because the sun blocks our view — they'd end up with a line that changes direction. This is because Mercury retrograde is an optical illusion resulting from our position (on Earth) relative to Mercury ... The term 'retrograde' in this instance refers to a perceived reversal in the standard west-to-east movement of Mercury through the stars ... Its orbit is smaller and faster than Earth's. When its orbit catches up to and passes Earth, it creates the illusion that Mercury is backtracking."

All that is good to know, but it doesn't make riding out the storm of Mercury in retrograde any easier for us believers.

When the more sensitive among us look to sky during these chaotic three-week periods, we don't think about how interesting the optical illusion is. We look to the sky and pray on any lucky star that may be listening that brutal misunderstandings and general disasters spare us while Mercury does its slow little dance.

This is particularly true when that angry red planet's little vacation from the norm coincides with April Fools' Day.

Here are three of the most important things to know about how Mercury in retrograde affects your love life and relationships, especially on April Fools' Day.

1. Mercury retrograde in Aries means tread extra lightly.

Oh, by the goddesses! Just when you thought the energy out there couldn't get any loonier, Mercury is going retrograde entirely under the sun sign of Aries (March 21-April 19), so hold on to your proverbial hats and glasses.

The Old Farmers' Almanac explains, "When Mercury is in retrograde, its influence depends on which of the 12 zodiac signs the planet is in when it goes retrograde."

Aries is a STRONG sign, and I use strong as a nice way of saying "too bold for its own good." Anyone who knows an Aries child knows they have tendency to say exactly what they feel exactly when they feel it. Combine that powerful willfulness with Mercury retrograde's favorite party trick of confusing communications and you get a double dose of misfortune waiting right around the bend if you don't watch your step.

Whatever you do and whatever you feel, choose your words carefully and listen to the words of others even more carefully.

If your boyfriend won't stop leaving wet towels on the bed, you might want to either give up this battle totally, or wait until the lines of communication are a bit clearer before you try to have even a constructive conversation about the issue.

2. Impulsivity reigns, so tighten your cosmic buckles.

The combination of Mercury in retrograde and the star sign of Aries means that you might feel a bit more hot-tempered than you usually do. You're also likely to feel more impulsive than normal, and not necessarily in a way that's good for your love life.

You're almost certainly going to feel an urge to lash out, vent, and rail about all of your many intense feelings during this time, so it's important to remember that these emotions aren't really "you" talking.

They're the result of all that cosmic dust and chaotic energy floating around after Mercury kicks it all up.

Do your best to brush off that impulsive energy in healthy ways and take care not to poke and prod needlessly at your relationship — unless you're willing to pay for it long after Mercury returns to its regularly scheduled programming, that is.

3. Practice extra caution on April Fools' Day.

It isn't exactly ideal for April Fools' Day to occur during an astronomical event known for causing confusion to reign, making communication in even the best and most loving relationships more difficult than ever.

That said, if you are a dyed-in-the-wool prankster, don't despair.

You can still enjoy your jollies on April Fools' Day, but you'd do better to stick to the kind of harmless pranks that are more likely to make the people you love laugh rather than cringe if you want to make it through the remainder of the cosmic turbulence relatively unscathed.
