The scene looked like a "horror film."

Juanita Gomez, who claimed her 33-year-old daughter was possessed by the devil and killed her in 2016, was found guilty of first-degree murder Thursday.

The mother claimed her daughter, Geneva Gomez, was speaking in tongues in a demonic voice before she shoved a crucifix and medallion down her throat until she died, according to a report by Local 10 News.

Geneva’s boyfriend, Francisco Merlos, discovered Geneva’s body on the floor after her mother "yanks me inside the house," he said in his testimony. He said Geneva’s arms were spread out like she had been crucified and that Juanita was mumbling about the devil and money, the Oklahoman reported.

"She was lying on the floor with her arms open and you couldn't recognize her," Merlos told the jury. "You couldn't recognize her face at all."

"She didn't look anything like the woman that he loved," Assistant District Attorney Suzanne Lavenue in court. “It scared him almost to death.”

According to investigators on the case, Juanita said she shoved the religious symbols down her daughter’s throat to rid her of Satan, which resulted in the death of Geneva on Aug. 27, 2016.

The mother allegedly admitted that she had punched her daughter repeatedly and then forced a crucifix down Geneva’s throat until she was bleeding from the mouth and stopped fighting.

"The victim suffered quite a bit," Lavenue told reporters. "The crime scene was horrific. It was obvious that there'd been an extensive struggle all over the house."

Juanita told police she watched Geneva die and then rearranged her body into the shape of a cross, a report from CBS News stated. She also placed a crucifix on Geneva’s chest and tried to clean her body.

Records show that defense attorneys were originally going to present a case for insanity on Juanita’s behalf but later chose not to because a psychologist found her competent to stand trial and said she was faking memory problems, according to CBS News.

As photos of Geneva’s body at the crime scene were shown at the trial, it was reported that her mother cried.

Juanita was found guilty of first-degree murder on Thursday. The jurors had recommended life in prison without parole.

"We think it was a just verdict. It was an incredibly heinous murder," Lavenue said.
