I’ve always believed in soulmates and, like most people, I wondered if I would ever find mine.

For a while I was skeptical, but that was mostly because I was young and thought it would take a long time for me to find my soulmate. Little did I know I would meet this person at the most unlikely time in the most unlikely way.

I think most of us think of soulmates as the person we spend the rest of our lives with in a romantic way.

We think of it as the person we will marry and be with forever. At least that’s how I used to see it. But I don’t anymore.

I no longer have to search for my soulmate. I found her. She came in the form of a brown-haired, quirky little girl with a fire that won’t soon die.

My soulmate is a different kind of soulmate. She is my sister, my best friend, and the person I miss most when we are apart.

At the end of the day, she is the person I know I can count on to always be there for me no matter what.

I wasn’t expecting it. It was a different kind of experience when she came into my life. But I wouldn’t change it.

How do I know she’s my soulmate? Simple. She put the life back inside me.

Before she came into my life I didn’t know myself. I didn’t like myself. My life had little to no meaning. But now when she comes up and hugs me or makes me laugh she reminds me that I have a purpose.

Even if that purpose is no more than to be there for her as she grows up and comes across her own bumps in the path. I plan to be there for her as she has been there for me.

Soulmates come in many forms. Maybe it’s a romantic partner, maybe it’s a friend, and maybe, just maybe, it’s a sibling. There’s even a chance it could be an animal.

The thing is, you don’t get to choose who it is. You don’t get to choose when it happens. You just have to sit back and enjoy the ride because someday that person is going to come along and you’ll just know.

You’ll know that you have met the person that no matter what you always want by your side.

So yes, soulmates exist, at least I think so. Everyone has a person.

And if you stop looking and stop trying to control it, that person will come to you. It will be when you least expect it.
