There are some people who find driving to be effortless, but the moment it starts to rain, they suddenly need complete silence in the car. To achieve that silence, they'll instinctually turn down the music just so they can see better, even though turning down the music has nothing to do with their sight. Despite the fact that research has found people tend to drive safer when it's raining, it doesn't stop them from taking certain precautions to ensure they don't crash or spiral out of control on the wet roads. Surprisingly, people who turn down the music to see better when driving in the rain usually have certain distinct traits that most of us wouldn't even think about.

Turning down the music isn't just about hearing better, either. It's so that people are able to process the road and what's around them with all of their senses. The second that even one of their senses is impaired, like their hearing, it can feel anxiety-inducing to navigate driving their car in the rain. The decision to turn down their music is how they're able to manage their stress and make sure they're staying in control. It might seem silly at first, but it truly does say more about their habits and traits than at first glance.

People who turn down the music to see better when driving in the rain usually have 10 distinct traits

1. They're cautious thinkers

These drivers are usually extremely careful and deliberate in their actions. They'll often anticipate potential hazards before they've even occurred. But it's not because they're being negative or always thinking something will go wrong.

"A very cautious person may not regret much in their recent past because they still think what they didn't do was 'too risky.' While being a risk-taker or very adventurous tends to be glorified in society, cautious people still contribute a great deal," explained psychology expert Alice Boyes.

They're just realistic about the fact that life can sometimes throw curveballs when you're least expecting it. These individuals are simply wired to try and find a little bit more control in situations that can feel slightly unpredictable.

People who turn down the music to see better when driving in the rain usually are incredibly observant of others, and their awareness is able to kick in instantly the second the rain starts coming down. They're not only watching the road, they're also noticing how other drivers are reacting to it.

Lowering their music gives them the chance to actually process what they're seeing. Rather than just assuming that everyone is driving carefully, they're preparing for the opposite. It helps them from being caught off-guard, and turning down their music helps them stay one step ahead of the other drivers on the road.

Patient people are the ones that don't panic at all when the rain starts coming down while driving. Instead, they'll calmly lower the volume on their music so they can focus better. They aren't getting frustrated or tense. It's usually because they're not in a rush to get anywhere at the expense of their safety.

They find comfort in being able to take their time with things. Rather than just pushing through the rain and leaving their music on, they'll slow down without thinking twice about it. They would much rather take their time than rush and possibly risk injuring themselves or others in the car with them.

The second that it starts to rain, drivers who immediately turn down their music aren't just seeing it as being caught in bad weather. Rather, they're picking up on how the roads will soon become slippery and other drivers might not be paying as close attention to the road as they should be.

They'll quickly notice when the rain becomes heavier, and being able to lower their music helps keep their awareness sharp for anything unexpected. Being detail-oriented means they're able to see how small details can quickly turn into a big problem if they're ignored. It's part of why they need to reduce any distractions like loud music that might be playing.

"Thinking strategically, big-picture, is exciting, not just to you but to your sphere of influence. In your personal life, offering a fund of strategic ideas can make you interesting to be around," pointed out career and personal coach Marty Nemko.

The second that the roads start becoming slippery with rain, their attention snaps to the forefront and they become fully present behind the wheel. Turning down the music ends up becoming one of the first things they do without even thinking about it.

They're simply trying to stay one step ahead of the situation at hand. It's why they're able to react so quickly, as they were already paying attention and fully alert. It's not because they were panicking.

Drivers that quickly turn down their music in the car to see while it's raining are also intentional with their actions. They're never reacting blindly to a situation. Instead, they're thinking deeply about every possible solution and picking the one that resonates the most with them.

They like to take control of how they're showing up. Being able to check in with themselves is their superpower compared to other people. If something feels even slightly distracting, they notice it quickly and act accordingly.

According to a 2025 study, good drivers are not only intentional, but multi-dimensional. They're more than just "nice"; rather, they practice good safety habits and communication. Additionally, good drivers are less aggressive, break fewer rules, and drive more safely overall.

Wen the rain starts coming down quite hard, they don't waste time thinking about what might help. They're able to make quick decisions, like turning down their music so they can see better.

"Creative problem-solving isn't just about finding solutions or accomplishing goals — it's about getting to know yourself better and experiencing the joy of finding a unique solution," Boyes insisted.

If something can help improve the situation they've found themselves in, they'll take it without question. They're usually really good at being able to cut through the noise and find a solution. While others might try and push through the distractions, those that are good at problem-solving will know they need to be removed altogether.

When it starts raining and the visibility is suddenly quite low, drivers that quickly turn their music down to see better aren't pretending that they can handle everything without doing so. They recognize that their attention is focused on the music, and to actually drive safer they need to turn it down. And it's because they're self-aware on the road.

"Self-awareness involves monitoring our stress, thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. It is important, because it's a major mechanism influencing personal development," pointed out psychology expert Tchiki Davis.

They'll do it without making a big deal out of the action because they know themselves enough to figure out what will work. If they even feel a little less focused, they'll do something about it immediately.

Empathetic people aren't just focused on themselves when driving, they're also thinking about who else is on the road with them. Turning down their music isn't just a decision they make for their own well-being, it's something they do to ensure they aren't impacting other drivers on the road as well.

With distracted driving accounting for 25% of traffic accidents, including listening to music, by being empathetic to themselves and others, people who turn down the music to focus are putting themselves in the shoes of others.

Instead of judging other drivers, they'll adjust their behavior to be safer. On a rain-slicked road, they're staying present and being more mindful of how their actions might impact someone else on the road.

People who are able to stay calm under pressure and not lose their cool when things become a bit chaotic, like experiencing heavy rainfall while on the road, are truly able to not tense up in the slightest. Instead, they just focus on what can be done in the meantime and that means turning down their music so they can see better and actually concentrate.

"We think that leading well under pressure means always having the right answer. But what people often need most is for us to be clear, calm, and connected," said leadership expert Nina Ahuja.

It's a small habit that allows them to stay centered in the midst of something that requires their complete and utter focus. They're able to remain steady even when others might feel overwhelmed. They aren't overreacting or letting their anxiety take over.
