Couples often make compromises and split the cost of basic necessities.
However, one woman was left shocked when her boyfriend of four years sent her a strange Venmo request.
The woman’s boyfriend charged her $7 for cold medicine when she was sick.
TikTok user Jacklyn (@jackieli852) shared the bizarre story as she does her make-up in a video that has been viewed over 4 million times.
“One time I was feeling really sick and I asked my boyfriend at the time if he could buy me some cold medicine on his way home,” Jacklyn says.
She claims that after her boyfriend got off work, he stopped at the pharmacy to get her DayQuil, a powerful medicine used to treat cold and flu symptoms.
“It was really kind of him, and I really appreciate that,” Jacklyn points out.
When the couple returned home, Jacklyn thanked her boyfriend before taking the medicine and falling asleep.
However, the next morning, she awoke to an alarming notification on her cell phone.
Jackyn’s boyfriend had charged her $7 for the cold medicine on Venmo, a mobile payment service designed to easily send and request money from others.
“He really Venmo charged me $7 for cold medicine,” Jacklyn says. She was especially confused by the request since she and her boyfriend at the time had been dating for over four years.
“I think I prefer a relationship where it’s like, ‘hey, I’ll get this and you get that next time’ and we’re not keeping track of our expenses dollar by dollar,” she explains.
She added that she and her boyfriend are no longer dating. “I should have known…wasn’t meant to be,” she says.
TikTok users slammed Jackyn’s ex-boyfriend.
They believed that picking up cold medicine for his sick girlfriend should be done at no cost.
“4 years... FOR MEDICINE?! My jaw dropped,” one user wrote.
“Picking up cold medicine on his way home is NOT super nice or sweet. That’s literally something you shouldn’t even have to ask for,” another user pointed out.
“I would [buy] cold medicine, no charge, for even my mildest of an acquaintance,” another user shared.
In a follow-up video, Jacklyn revealed that her ex-boyfriend was not stingy about money for their entire relationship.
“He was a pretty good partner,” she says. “He would pay for my dinner when it was my birthday, on our anniversary, and Valentine’s Day but other than that we did a pretty good job of splitting the bills evenly.”
She adds that there were “a few dollars here and there” spent on each other by one or the other but it was nothing significant.
Jacklyn shared that the Venmo request incident happened within the last six months of the couple’s relationship, at which point they had both “checked out” and knew that they were no longer compatible.
“It’s all water under the bridge,” she says. “No hard feelings, I just thought it was funny.”
