Empathetic people with highly analytical minds can make decisions while still considering how those decisions will affect others.

Being overly empathetic or too analytical can lead to issues and poor decision-making in certain situations, but striking a balance between the two is what makes people successful.

Empathetic people with unusually strong analytical skills say these phrases casually:

1. 'Let's figure out why this keeps happening'

Strongly analytical people will try to look at problems from a logical standpoint. However, they try to find the root cause of a problem while also taking the other person’s feelings into consideration and making them feel safe. So, they will try to look at past surface-level complaints to understand the real pattern.

This phrase encourages someone to share the problem without feeling attacked. There are three types of empathy: cognitive, emotional, and compassionate.

Cognitive empathy is the ability to identify and understand other people’s emotions. Emotional empathy is when you feel what the other person is feeling. Compassionate empathy is the ability not only to understand what the other person is going through but also to help them.

In this scenario, "help me understand" uses all three types of empathy, allowing the speaker to identify the emotion, feel it, and find a resolution.

3. 'It sounds like X is causing Y for you'

This phrase makes the other person feel seen. Or, if the speaker is wrong, it lets the other person correct them without strings attached. In the workplace, this is a great skill to have, especially for bosses. In this study by Yang Woon Chun, Seunghee Im, and Jung Eun Kim, they found that "employees with empathic concern can gain numerous individual, organizational, and societal benefits."

It’s so easy for us to get stuck in our own heads. Sometimes we see a situation as a personal attack when, in reality, it might not be. Empathetic, analytical people can help others with their problems by helping them separate their feelings from the facts.

This is called the ABC method, which is used in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. When an event happens, psychologists encourage patients to identify (A) the activating event (what triggered the situation), (B) their belief (whether it's rational or irrational), and (C) the consequence. This method allows people to reshape how they remember an event and see it for what it actually was.

5. 'You're allowed to feel that way'

Empathic yet analytical people understand that others need to feel their emotions in order to eventually see a situation clearly. If people aren’t allowed to feel their emotions, then they will only feel built-up frustration, which will only grow over time. This phrase expresses that the validity of the emotion is not the same as the facts of the event, but it's still important.

6. 'What do you need right now?'

This is another phrase that really uses the analytical mind while also validating the other person. Allowing the other person to get the resources that they need is the best thing to do in a crisis.

For example, if there is a problem at work and an employee goes to their boss with a concern, instead of being too nice or too mean, the boss asks what the employee needs. Now, the employee feels seen, while the boss can start to fix whatever the situation is.

7. 'How can I help?

When presented with a problem, people with analytical minds try to address the situation. Instead of freaking out, which will eventually cause more problems, they just try to help.

This is especially true in medical scenarios. If somebody comes into the ER, a doctor can’t panic; they just need to act. Same thing with personal problems. If a friend comes to you with a crisis, it’s important to validate their feelings while also taking action. Figuring out how to help is very important.

8. 'That's a good point'

This is a great phrase, especially when you are in disagreement with someone. It doesn’t mean the argument is over, but it means you are willing to find common ground and also admit when you are wrong.

This is also very important in relationships because it’s often easy to just argue in circles with your partner. However, when you look at things from an analytical standpoint, normally the truth is somewhere in the middle.

9. 'Let me think about that'

Analytical, empathetic people try their best to help others. So, when something bad happens, instead of jumping to conclusions, they take their time to find a solution. They need to consider all of the possible outcomes and how each will affect people until they find the most effective one. In the meantime, they are not afraid to look indecisive or dumb because they don’t have the answer yet.
