People With High Standards & Low Tolerance For Shadiness Usually Say 9 Phrases In Tense Conversations
Photo Editor: Arianna Jeret | Photo: iona didishvili / Shutterstock People with high standards don't have the time for shady behavior. It doesn't matter who it is. When someone tries to avoid accountability, they're quick to call it out and let the person know they won't just sit there and take it. Instead of allowing themselves to be taken advantage of, these people won't hesitate to put manipulative people or liars in their place when it seems like someone is trying to play games with them.
9 phrases someone with high standards says when they think someone is trying to be shady
1. 'Okay, but that's not what you said earlier'

People with high standards don't have much patience and have little filter when it comes to their suspicions. Quick to call out shady people, they will point it out when someone says something that contradicts what they said earlier.
Even if it leads to a little drama, they couldn't care less. People with high standards are assertive at heart. And "an assertive person does not wait too long," said Joachim I. Krueger, Ph.D. They may choose a private place and ask follow-up questions, but while it's often hard to speak up, staying silent only teaches people that they get away with poor behavior.
2. 'Why couldn't you tell me that from the beginning?'

People with high standards are blunt. If something is bothering them, they're quick to bring it to your attention. Even if it's awkward, they'd rather be upfront than risk miscommunication. They know that miscommunication can easily cause misunderstandings and mistakes, so they will easily grow frustrated and ask why they couldn't have told them that from the beginning.
They know that being vulnerable is hard, but they also know that everyone involved is an adult. At some point, they have to learn to communicate. Communication can be hard, but that doesn't mean it's OK to let people be childish. They can grow up or leave, but they can't have it both ways.
3. 'Are you really going to double down now?'

Whatever someone says, they'd better stick to it. Especially if they're dealing with someone who holds themselves and others to high standards, they don't get to tell lies and run away. If they say something out of pocket, they'd better prepare themselves, because these people aren't scared to point out when they are doubling down on something they said that was wrong or misleading.
They aren't looking for problems, but that doesn't mean they forgive easily. If someone tries to humble them, they'll do it first without a second thought. That's why it's better not to test them. Unless you're willing to back yourself up, don't start something you can't finish.
4. 'I'm not going back and forth with you'

Sorry, but people with standards don't like going back and forth about anything. It doesn't matter what the situation is. If they notice someone is being sneaky, they'll stop them in their tracks by firmly telling them they won't be going back and forth about it.
They know that sometimes you've got to put a lid on it. Going around in circles doesn't help anyone. As a matter of fact, staying stuck on negative memories can lead to depression. Nothing good comes from staying stuck in the past, especially when someone isn't willing to move on no matter what.
5. 'Don't put words in my mouth'

If there's one thing no-nonsense people can't stand, it's someone who tries to twist their words. They're already direct, so there's no need to read between the lines.
People with high standards don't hold their cards close. If something bothers them, they'll tell you without hesitation. Unfortunately, shady people didn't get the memo. Instead of listening to what they're saying, they will try to put words in their mouths that they didn't say.
That kind of behavior makes people who hold themselves and others accountable snap. Unless they said it directly, don't assume that's what they meant. Otherwise, they'll call you out on it.
6. 'If you have something to say, say it to my face'

No-nonsense people dislike passive-aggressive remarks. They don't mess with gossipers or indirect people, so they'll tell them to just go ahead and say what they want to say to their face. They'd rather make people uncomfortable than allow someone to disrespect them.
Call them prideful, but disrespect grinds their gears. Research from 2014 found that disrespect leads to greater aggression than being disliked ever would. That's why shady people might want to tone it down. Unless they want a full-blown showdown, they'd better choose their words wisely.
7. 'I can put two and two together'

People with high standards aren't just picky. They're often highly intelligent. They notice what others miss and connect the dots quickly. That's probably why they'll tell someone who is trying to mess with them that they can put two and two together.
These people don't allow bad behavior to slide. It might feel easy to turn the other cheek, but that only works for so long. Give someone an inch, and they'll run a mile. If you want to be taken seriously, you've got to stand on business.
8. 'That still doesn't answer the question'

If someone's trying to get one over them, it won't work. No-nonsense people with standards have no tolerance for someone who tries to skirt around the truth. If someone tries to dodge accountability, they'll shut it down by pointing out that they still didn't address the question at hand.
They want answers here and now. It doesn't matter how uncomfortable the truth is. They'd rather have the truth than deal with a liar. That's why it's better to switch tactics and be direct. You won't get away from their line of questioning anytime soon.
9. 'That told me everything I needed to know'

They say actions speak louder than words, but honestly, both matter. Words and actions can reveal who someone is. And considering that people with high standards pay attention to both, nobody should be surprised when they say, "That told me everything I needed to know."
When someone shows you who they are, believe them. What they say afterward doesn't matter. Forgiveness is important for our well-being, but it doesn't mean access. Once a shady person shows their true colors, no-nonsense people move differently.
