Not all parents strive to grow emotionally. Because they're caught up in their own ego, they struggle to accept constructive criticism and focus on justifying their poor behavior instead of taking accountability for their actions.

Immature parents like this are quick to shift the blame onto their children. In the moment, it feels easier to point the finger than take accountability. Nobody wants to admit they're wrong, especially to their own children. But while avoiding accountability feels easier in the moment, they're in for a rude awakening when their kids grow up and develop these unhealthy habits.

Kids who were raised by parents who never admitted when they were wrong often have these habits as adults

1. They apologize even when they did nothing wrong

Parents who didn't heal took their frustrations out on their kids. Rather than looking inward, they blamed all their problems on external factors. Screaming at their partner and gaslighting their children, these parents caused their now-adult children to apologize, even when they did nothing wrong.

Anytime they spoke up or had an issue, they were manipulated into believing they were being problematic. Now, even as adults, they find fault in themselves. Because they're used to rushing to make amends, breaking this cycle isn't easy.

Since over-apologizing often stems from childhood trauma, breaking this habit takes time and patience. This is why adult children shouldn't be too harsh on themselves.

2. They second-guess themselves constantly

Most people grow into their confidence. Once they get older and gain more real-life experience, they become less unsure of themselves.

But for children raised by parents who couldn't admit they were wrong, this growth doesn't happen naturally. What takes most people years to develop may never happen for these adult children. Because their parents gaslit them so deeply, they now have a bad habit of second-guessing themselves constantly.

3. They can't admit when they need help

Some people would rather hurl themselves out of a moving car than admit they need help. Call them dramatic, but they learned as kids that asking for help only leads to more problems. Because their parents couldn't take accountability when they were raising them, they turn into adults who learn to suffer in silence.

While it's unhealthy, it's a hard habit to break, and one that can take years to unlearn. This is why their children should be given grace. Even if it's frustrating, learning to be vulnerable doesn't happen overnight. For many, it might require professional help.

4. They over-explain themselves

Many children who were raised by parents who lacked accountability grow up to be chronic over-explainers. Once they say no, they give every excuse in the book to justify their decision. Apologizing profusely and stuttering over their words, their habit of over-explaining usually stems from childhood. Because their parents disrespected them and never apologized, they now believe that saying no is problematic.

Even when others tell them it's okay, breaking free from the guilt isn't easy. As psychotherapist Ilene Strauss Cohen, Ph.D., explained, "This guilt comes from believing that prioritizing oneself over others is wrong."

5. They feel responsible for other people's emotions

It isn't anyone's responsibility to manage someone else's emotions. This is why it's detrimental when parents raise their kids to think otherwise. Teaching children that they're in charge of other people's happiness carries into adulthood.

When they're used to always prioritizing other people's needs, voicing their needs becomes impossible. This is dangerous, as doing so is essential for building trust and respect in any relationship. So, if adult children are struggling to voice their needs, get help. Healthy relationships can only happen once you set proper boundaries.

6. They get defensive easily

Always being blamed for everything is bound to make someone defensive. It doesn't matter how gentle they try to be in their criticism. If these now-adult children haven't done the inner work to heal, expect them to get defensive easily.

Because while it isn't their fault they turned out this way, unlearning this defensiveness is hard. Their parents had them in survival mode. Always being screamed at, it isn't shocking that they struggle now as adult. Especially since being blamed for no reason is already hurtful, combining it with childhood trauma is a disaster to get over.

7. They avoid conflict at all costs

It didn't matter what they said to their immature parents. They may have put their best defense out there. Once a parent is determined to be blameless, there's no convincing them otherwise.

These parents weren't trying to mend bridges with their children. They lowkey blew up in their faces when given the opportunity. Hurling insults and using hardcore manipulation tactics, the best way these kids knew to protect themselves was often to remain silent.

Now, as adults, they avoid conflict at all costs. Unable to say what's on their mind out of fear, it'll take years to learn that their current relationships are a safe space to express themselves unapologetically.

8. They feel guilty for setting boundaries

One of the worst things about dealing with parents who won't admit their mistakes is that you never learn how to become your own person. Afraid of stepping on someone else's toes, children whose parents blamed them for everything often grow up feeling guilty for setting boundaries.

Deep down inside, they may know this mentality isn't good for them, but they see people-pleasing as a way to keep the peace. Especially in their romantic relationships, they're likely to stay silent because they are afraid of being abandoned. Unfortunately, that fear may become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Once they feel that distance, their loved ones shut down and lose interest.

9. They shut down emotionally

Healing from the guilt that arises from being constantly blamed by your parents as a child isn't easy. Without the proper resources and support, these people may develop a bad habit of shutting down emotionally. It isn't healthy, but once someone hurls criticism their way, they're out.

It doesn't matter how gentle a person tries to be. Because they've associated criticism with shame and rejection, unlearning this association becomes impossible without the proper guidance.

10. They downplay their emotions

If someone always downplays their emotions, it's often because they were raised by parents who couldn't own up to their mistakes. From a young age, whenever they felt something negative, their parents yelled at them to get over it. It's no wonder they can't process their emotions when their parents never found fault in their own emotions but always found fault in their children's.

Trauma can have long-lasting impacts that continue with them until adulthood. It doesn't matter how many years pass. Without proper guidance, people are likely to continue questioning themselves. This is why it's important to give oneself grace. It isn't easy, but becoming more emotionally in tune with themselves is possible.
