Sometimes, we drain ourselves so slowly that we don’t even realize what's happening. We can easily become so caught up in work and taking care of family members that we forget to care for ourselves. Before we know it, we’re so burnt out we don’t even know how to use our free time anymore.

Once someone is almost entirely depleted both mentally and emotionally, they will often start to say things that reflect just how spent they are when they are having even the most casual conversations. The good news is that you are not alone with these feelings. And, with some help, your life can do a complete 180.

People who are 99.9% mentally and emotionally depleted will often say these phrases in casual conversations

1. "I'm just tired"

We all get tired. However, if you are so wiped out that you can’t get through basic tasks, it may be a sign of something deeper going on.

Sometimes, if you ask someone how they are feeling and you reply just by saying they're tired, it may be an excuse to not go into how they are actually feeling. This phrase is often a warning that something more problematic is actually happening, as deep sadness can alter your brain chemistry, interrupting your sleep and putting the body under chronic stress.

We all find ourselves in situations that were supposed to be hopeful, but have ended up the opposite. You may have been excited to start your new job, but now it is sapping the life out of you. Or, maybe you went back to school to find a new purpose in life, but now you have no free time and are questioning your decision.

Whatever the reason may be, this phrase signals emotional detachment after prolonged stress. Not caring is our brains’ way of protecting us from more stressful situations. When we don’t care, then our feelings can’t be hurt, right?

3. "Whatever works for everyone is fine by me"

This one may just sound like a typical people-pleasing phrase, but it may be a sign of something else. Decision fatigue can happen when someone gets so tired from making decisions that they give up. In these circumstances, they have a lower capacity to advocate for themselves.

This phrase is especially concerning for people who used to speak up for themselves but have now become passive. When someone is drained, even the smallest of decisions can feel like hard work. They would rather give up control just to save energy.

There’s nothing more annoying than when you don’t feel like explaining yourself, but someone is constantly asking if you’re OK. One common coping mechanism is to keep repeating that you're fine.

This short phrase is a way to dismiss somebody without having to spend the energy to explain yourself. This phrase is especially concerning to hear if it obviously isn’t true.

5. "I just want to be left alone"

We all need our peace and quiet from time to time. However, when someone is constantly canceling plans or ignoring their loved ones just to be alone, it’s likely a sign that they are depleted.

This phrase isn't necessarily intended to reject anyone. Instead, it's a reflection of the fact that this person cannot handle interaction with others. Sometimes we just need to be alone and not have to explain ourselves to anybody for a brief moment in order to regroup and replenish our energy.

Like all of us, a mentally drained person usually just wants to be heard and understood. When they constantly have to repeat themselves or feel like they’re not getting this outside validation, they will probably just give up and resort to saying it doesn't matter anyway.

They have emotionally surrendered. This level of apathy is often a clear indication of depression and is a sign to seek help.

7. "I can't do this right now"

When someone says they can't do this right now, they have possibly lost their capacity for resilience.

People with energy are able to tackle the challenges and inconveniences that pop up for everyone occasionally. Mentally and emotionally drained people, however, don’t have this luxury. They may resort to letting other people handle things or allowing their to-do list to grow because they don’t have the emotional bandwidth for anything else.
