People have a very hard time dealing with one-on-one, in-your-face confrontation, and to combat this feeling, many avoid the awfulness of the truth by acting overly sweet and kind.
The message being, "How can you hurt me when I'm so sweet to you?" It's a defense, and many of us do it. When we don't want to be told what to do, instead of going to battle for it, we slip into the old pattern of getting what we want through manipulation.
