best sex positions to get pregnant

Most medical researchers say it’s possible to get pregnant through having intercourse in nearly any position. That being said, gravity does play a role in conception.

"Many medical professionals recommend against positions that don’t require sperm to travel upstream — thereby having to fight the pull of gravity — such as woman-on-top or standing positions. Generally, man-on-top positions such as missionary are said to be most effective in increasing the odds of conception. Some experts also recommend placing a pillow beneath the woman’s hips to help make the sperm’s journey easier," says Ava Science Editor, Lindsay Meisel.

Although the research tying sex positions to conceive a baby is limited, there has been research done on artificial insemination processes in which a small tube is placed into the uterus to insert sperm.

"One study found that when women lay on their back for a period of 15 minutes following artificial insemination, there was a 27 percent incidence of pregnancy after three tries, whereas women who got up immediately after insemination had only an 18 percent incidence of pregnancy. So, if you are trying to become pregnant, it may be worth laying still for a short period post-coital rather than standing immediately," says Meisel.

Some fertility experts also recommend women practice yoga poses that require them to go upside down, called inversions. "It’s been suggested that inversions could have positive impacts on the endocrine system, which may positively affect the reproductive system," says Meisel.

But what else can you do to maximize your chances of conception? Here are the best sex positions to get pregnant.

1. Horizontal positions

"Any position can work. However, it's best to lie down after intercourse for 10-15 minutes for the insemination to take place. Standing up after intercourse can have gravity work against the insemination," says Fares Diarbakerli, M.D.

2. Missionary

It’s generally agreed upon that the missionary position is best when trying to conceive (man on top, woman lying down on her back).

"Most sperm are strong swimmers but giving them an extra edge by having gravity on their side doesn’t hurt," says Suzanne Munson, M.S., health expert for Fairhaven Health.

Missionary position is the usually the best one for conception, agrees Deena Blumenfeld, a Lamaze certified childbirth educator. The sperm is deposited close to the cervix upon male orgasm, and the body is in a gravity-positive position to help keep the sperm up by the cervix, which makes their swimming distance shorter.

"If the woman wishes to get pregnant, she can stay lying down for 10-15 mins after intercourse to give the sperm the best opportunity to find their target," she says.

3. Doggy style

Doggy style (man in back entering from the rear) also allows for deep penetration which deposits sperm close to the cervix upon ejaculation.

"Using a small pillow to prop up the hips slightly may also improve conception efforts," says Munson.

4. Spooning

It's true: Cuddling does get those chemicals flowing, and that can mean good things for making a baby. The more aroused a man is, the more potent his release, so foreplay — such as that pre-sex spooning — can go get things revved up, so to speak.

5. Your favorite position

Whatever positions you and your partner enjoy the most will mean he's more aroused (more potent release) and you have more lubrication, which important for deeper penetration. Baby-making sex often feels very business-like. It's important to put that passion back.

6. Titling

Any position that allows the woman to tilt her pelvis moves the sperm along to its destination more quickly. So, try getting creative or just put a pillow under your butt to create a better angle.

7. Side by side

Much like spooning, side by side and face to face also allows the sperm to be "deposited" closer to where you need it to be.
