Dealing with someone who's passive-aggressive can be difficult, but some people have cracked the code on how to respond to their subtle meanness.

They aren't afraid to use their intellect to call them out on their backhanded ways, usually with blunt efficiency. It's a good thing blunt people exist. Unlike everyone else, they know how to clap back with these brilliant phrases.

Brilliant phrases people who know just how to put passive-aggressive people in their place say:

1. 'I'd rather you be straight with me'

Playing passive-aggressive games is highly annoying. It doesn't matter how cool someone thinks they're being. To everyone else, it's frustrating and immature. Rolling their eyes internally, only blunt people have the ability to put them in their place by saying, "I'd rather you be straight with me."

Nope, they aren't about to roll over and pretend someone wasn't being disrespectful. Call them drama-starters, but it won't change the fact that being indirect isn't helpful.

Being direct means there's no wiggle room for more passive-aggression. This is why blunt people cut to the chase. Even if it's scary, it's better to be direct than to shy away from confrontation.

Passive-aggressive people behave the way they do because they struggle to be direct. Harvard-trained psychologist Dr. Cortney Warren explained that most of the time, a passive-aggressive person is hiding their hurt but doesn't know how to bring it up. She noted, "You could say something like: 'I know you’re telling me you’re not upset, but it doesn’t feel that way to me.' Or, 'I get the impression that you’re upset. Do you want to talk about it?'

She went on to say, "Remind them that you care and are willing to talk if and when they’re ready. In the meantime, walk away and focus on what you do have control over: you."

Blunt people don't care about coming off as rude. Once someone disrespects them, all bets are off. Tired of the passive-aggressive behavior, they mean it when they say, "I'm not a mind-reader." Call them rude, but most of them don't care to be considerate. They have little patience for immature people.

In any adult relationship, someone who relies on passive-aggressive communication can't expect others to cater to their needs with zero guidance. If they want something, it's better to be direct.

The only way to have constructive communication is with respect. Even completely different viewpoints can get along as long as they treat each other and their opinion without resorting to insults.

Disrespect only leads to greater aggression. So, next time, just be direct. It's uncomfortable, but it'll pan out way better.

People who are great at handling passive-aggressive people aren't shy when it comes to conflict. It's intimidating to be called out, but it's way more effective than dancing around whatever is eating at them.

If they ask and passive-aggressive people say, "It's nothing," only to find out they were lying, they're going to be put on blast. This is because they already gave you a chance to speak your truth. Once that chance is up, anything that isn't cleared up won't be treated with kindness or consideration anymore.

Unlike others who let poor behavior slide, blunt people know that shame is a great tool. Especially when dealing with passive-aggressive behavior, the best way to get others to fold is to put them on the spot slyly.

Blunt people don't like immature people. It doesn't matter how frustrated they are or what the situation is. They understand that passive-aggressive behavior rarely works out in anyone's favor. This is why they're quick to say, "Why did you feel a need to say that?"

In this case, they aren't trying to be rude. While they were disrespected, this doesn't mean they always want to escalate an issue. Sometimes, they want to make room for understanding and connection. By telling someone they're being unkind, they give them space to explain themselves, which in turn leads to more productive conversations.
