laszlo | Shutterstock In a world that's already overstimulating, most of us feel like we're at our wit's end on a regular basis. Only a select few can keep a level head when conflict arises.
These authentically calm people aren't made of steel. Just like everyone else, calm people get frustrated too. But rather than allowing anger or stress to control them, they keep themselves grounded, often by saying a few simple phrases to remind them of what truly matters.
10 phrases commonly said by people who are truly calm on the inside:
1. 'I'm cool with whatever'

It may seem like it comes naturally, but it takes a long time for calm people to learn how to effectively manage their emotions. Believe it or not, they used to have their fair share of historical crash-outs, too!
At first they had to "fake it 'til they made it' true that they were cool with whatever, but with time and patience, calm people now know when they can say it and truly mean it. They practiced being able to go with the flow, and over time it started to come more naturally.
Of course, people who are truly calm don't go along with things that feel wrong or don't match their values. They simply save their protests and disagreements for times it truly matters.
Unlike others, they understand it isn't healthy to control everything. As therapist Noelle McWard, LCSW explians, "You will never be able to fully control your external environment, no matter how hard you try." This is why calm people learn to let go of their expectations. Whatever happens, they know it'll be okay.
2. 'I'm not too worried about it'

Calm people have learned to let go and live life. Deep down, they know that worrying doesn't actually solve problems. So, rather than stressing about it, a phrase they love to say is, "I'm not too worried about it." It took a while, but they now believe in themselves and their future.
Call them delusional, but they truly believe that things will work out. Even if things don't go their way, they don't allow themselves to feel too bothered. They know that everything happens for a reason, which is why they choose to shrug their shoulders instead.
3. 'Don't stress, it'll work itself out'

They don't just remind themselves that it's okay, authentically calm people remind those around them, too. Without trying, they put everyone's minds at ease. Smiling brightly and patting your shoulder in support, you'll often hear them say, "Don't stress, it'll work itself out."
Some may call them overly optimistic but when grounded in reality, it's a great way to keep a simple positive attitude. According to Albizu University, "Positive thinking can boost our immune system, improve our mental health, and foster a greater sense of self-efficacy."
This is why they tell others to look at the bright side whenever it feels authentic and would not undermine the well-being of themselves or others. After all, worrying about the unknown often hurts more than it helps.

Calm people aren't just sweethearts, they're understanding too. They don't jump to conclusions or demean others.
Without fail, calm people step outside of their own perspective, which is why it's so easy for them to say, "That's okay, I understand." Does it suck they didn't get the job? Yes. Is it heart-wrenching that the ice cream machine at McDonald's doesn't work? Absolutely. But they don't let it get them down. They understand they can't get everything they want and that the person working at McDonald's isn't the reason those machines are so darn glitchy.
Time and time again, they choose to give grace and offer understanding when others might snap. This positive and empathetic outlook often creates more incoming positivity and empathy from others, too.
5. 'I see where you're coming from'

Authentically calm people aren't always looking to be right, which is a rare trait these days! While it may feel good to say, "I told you so," they value resolution way too much to sacrifice relationships and their own dignity.
Peacemakers at heart, calm people are quick to say, "I see where you're coming from" even when they disagree. They know that there are many different ways to see an issue or interpret a situation.
Rather than fixating on their side, calm people lend an ear. It's humbling, but compromising only leads to brighter results. In romantic relationships, healthy compromise doesn't just resolve conflict, it helps build emotional intimacy, too.
People who are actually calm don't agree just to agree, especially if the person they're speaking with has values that don't match their own. Yes, they'll call out and challenge people when it's the morally correct thing to do. But in that process, they'll work hard to build mutual understanding, too.
6. 'We can talk about it later'

It seems like people often rush into arguments and then rush to get out of them. They don't mean to go to these extremes, but because they're overwhelmed, they unintentionally make things worse.
Calm people aren't like that. They try their very best to take a break from conversations before they say things they regret. A phrase they love to use is, "We can talk about it later" which can take the pressure off both parties.
Their goal of disagreement isn't to scare others, after all, it's to prevent tensions from worsening while sharing understanding and making sure both people feel heard. Authentically calm people don't want to hurt your feelings by invalidating them. So, as painful as it feels in the moment, they'd rather wait.
As licensed clinical social worker Robert Taibbi, L.C.S.W. writes, "You want to cool off in order to get your rational brain back online. If you try to talk too soon, you're likely to trigger each other again."
7. 'No worries'

It's easy to get fed up with the small things in life. When you're already frustrated, hearing others' criticisms or demands can feel overstimulating. But rather than letting that disturb their peace, calm people find a way to manage their emotions.
They try things like journaling, meditating, or taking a breather, and these things all make it that much easier to say, "No worries," and mean it.
Calm people know that life isn't always sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes, your coworkers will correct you or your partner will demand more from you. However, they never take it to heart. They go with the punches, which is why they're so calm in everyday life.
8. 'I can work with that'

People who are truly calm don't throw a fit and demand others obey them blindly. Because they have so much respect and consideration for others, they'll do their best to say, "I can work with that." The goal isn't to win, after all, it's to resolve.
The best thing about calm people is that they're willing to meet you halfway, even when you disagree, as long as it doesn't compromise their morality or harm others. They'll find ways to work with rather than against you in these moments.
They might not get everything they want, but as long as it's semi-fair, they make their peace and accept reality.
9. 'We have time'

Calm people aren't in a rush, even when they're in a hurry. Call them nonchalant, but they know that rushing and panicking only makes everything worse and know that rushing every day increases their anxiety.
This is why calm people take a breather and say, "We have time." Their goal isn't to show up late, it's to calm their nervous system so they can be efficient and thoughtful.
Life's already stressful enough. With kids, work, school, and messy family members to deal with, the last thing people need is rushing out the door without eating breakfast, which only makes them more emotional and less careful.
Even if it means waking up early, they'd rather groan at that alarm than freak out later.
10. 'It's no biggie'

Calm people are the most nonchalant folks you'll ever meet. They aren't putting on a show to impress others and they don't need a lot of praise.
It doesn't matter what the situation is, without fail, calm people say, "It's no biggie." They simply refuse to be bothered by the small things and don't need their accomplishments lauded.
They know what it feels like to overwhelm themselves. Rather than repeating the pattern, calm people find ways to ground themselves and accept reality. It isn't easy, but by letting things go, they learn to appreciate life way more. And that is the biggest accomplishment of these amazing, authentically calm people.
