Mental & Emotional Empaths Can Do 10 Things In Casual Conversation That Average People Can't Do
Zura Modebadze | Pexels Emotional and mental empath often absorb other people's feelings. Sometimes, it's debilitating, but other times, it makes them a stronger and way more resilient.
Selflessness can be dangerous, causing people to forget who they truly are. Still, empaths set themselves apart from ordinary people, especially in conversations, where they find certain things easy to talk about.
The things mental and emotional empaths can do in conversation that ordinary people have a hard time with:
1. Notice when someone's smile doesn't match their mood

Nothing gets past an empath, as they can tell when someone isn't okay. When a person's smile doesn't match their mood, it's evident to them that something is wrong and that person is faking their happiness. It sounds like magic, but they don't need to be a mind-reader to pick up on vibes.
It's their overall demeanor that has empaths taking a second look. They notice that even if a person is smiling, their fists are clenched or their body language is reserved. They try to ease people's worries by changing the subject.
2. Pick up on tension

Empaths are highly observant and in tune with people's emotions, so they're able to understand when there's tension in a room or conversation. They pay close attention to the things that ordinary people miss, so they can almost immediately figure out that there's an issue brewing under the surface.
For many, it's like a huge blanket falling over them. They feel the weight of that negativity, and it affects their sensitive nature. When they're bombarded by this intensity all the time, they become anxious.
3. Notice changes in tone

Most people aren't great at observing the details. They don't pick up on red flags on the first date or can't tell how authentic their best friend is being. Observational skills aren't inherent, and unlike empaths who have a built-in radar for this kind of stuff, the rest of us are learning as we go.
Empaths can notice a shift in tone in conversations, while the average person often can't. They're highly observant, and as body language expert Joe Navarro explained, "Observation is not about being judgmental... it is about seeing the world around you, having situational awareness, and interpreting what it is that others are communicating both verbally and nonverbally... Good observation skills give us the opportunity to test and validate what others think, feel, or intend for us."
4. Match other people's energy

For many, they don't match energy knowingly, but it's something common with empaths. The average person isn't sitting there planning out their interactions, but empaths tend to mirror others naturally.
In the moment, they don't think much of it, but they do so unconsciously. As long as they don't pick up on others' manipulation, mirroring as an empath can lead to closer relationships in their personal life and even career.
5. Pay attention to the person everyone else ignores

Especially in a social setting, being ignored is inevitable. Families are excited to see one another and co-workers naturally have their favorites. But sometimes, there's a person standing awkwardly in the corner while everying avoids interacting with them.
For empaths, however, they don't let these people go unnoticed for long. Empaths see and feel everything. Picking up on people's discomfort, they're the first to extend an olive branch. They include others to make sure they're never left out.
6. Ask the right questions

It isn't easy to read a room. Predicting how others feel or how they'll react is a guessing game. But empaths don't need to guess, as they know the right questions to ask in conversations. They don't get tripped up by their own thoughts, instead allowing their intuition to guide them.
They trust themselves fully, which is why they're great at breaking the tension. With an easy-going smile, they'll make the most awkward situations feel safe. They bridge gaps that make people flock to them, and they're incredibly understanding.
7. Tell when someone is lying

Spotting a liar isn't as simple as some think. In the moment, people get caught up in everything going on around them. With multiple people talking and changing their body language, they struggle to spot a liar. While the average person tells one or two lies a day, an empath can point out their dishonesty right away.
Unlike the rest of us, empaths are great at seeing through the noise. Hyper-wired to focus on emotions, they don't have a difficult time differentiating fact from untruth. With a simple look, empaths can tell whose full of it.
8. Notice when a joke hurts someone's feelings

Empaths are sensitive, so they'll never purposely make an ill-intended joke to tear someone down. However, if they manage to, they can instantly tell when that joke has hurt someone's feelings. They're quick to offer an apology and make amends, though.
They're paying close attention not only to someone's body language, but pick up on their emotions. So, when a person feels hurt and in pain, they can immediately point it out. Because they lead with compassion, they don't let that hurt linger for long.
9. Know when someone needs instant reassurance

You may hear people say that reassurance is weak, but every single one of us needs it from time to time. As life coach John Amodeo said, "If you find yourself needing reassuring presence or validation, it doesn't mean you're an insecure person; it simply means you're human. It takes courage to reach out and ask for support when needed."
Empaths can tell when someone needs reassuring. Especially if they're close to them, it's like they're experiencing their pain first-hand. So, don't fight an empath if they try to comfort you. You may think it's pity, but being compassionate is a part of their nature.
10. Realize when someone feels overwhelmed

Finding a way to control intense emotions is hard for the average person. Once we feel overwhelmed, we can spiral. Empaths can feel this, which is why they're usually overwhelmed, too. Like an ordinary person experiencing emotions, empaths are also going through the same intensity.
Rather than holding it in, empaths encourage others to let it all out. It may be hard at first, but they know better than to discourage vulnerability. The more you hold onto those feelings, the worse it gets, not just for yourself but for everyone around you.
