Life can get overwhelming sometimes. You’ve got projects due, everyone seems to want a moment of your time, and everything seems to be going wrong. How do you cope when you're feeling overwhelmed?
What do the overwhelmed zodiac signs do when their world seems to be crashing down around them? What are the coping mechanisms each sign employs and how are they singular to them? For some people, moving their body helps them to de-stress and get back control of their lives, others breathe deeply to center themselves, and others may look to astrology or their horoscope for clarity.
When we’re feeling beaten down, it’s easy to do things that are self-destructive like self-medicating: drinking to excess, eating too much, and sleeping the day away. You may want to isolate yourself, feeling as if you don’t want to bring anyone else down, but isolating yourself may be the worst thing you can do for yourself.
When you feel overwhelmed, it’s important to remember that you’ve felt this way before and you survived it. Your problems are never as bad as you think, and most importantly, you’re not alone. People have struggled with the same problems that you struggle with and there are people in your life who want you to succeed.
Sometimes all you need is to remind yourself of how much you have to be grateful for. When you feel stuck and powerless, that’s when you need to do something — anything — that gets you moving and thinking. It’s funny how quickly things can turn around for you when you just take a baby step.
ARIES (March 21 - April 19)
When your natural inclination might be to get extremely angry and punch a hole in the wall, what you should do when you feel overwhelmed is allow yourself a physical time-out. Go out and get some exercise, move your body, and stop thinking about everything — even if it's only for a few moments.
If you do what you like to do for exercise, like going for a swim or taking a spin class, you can reset your mind and tackle your problems from a calmer place.
TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)
Your first reaction may be to overindulge in food, drink, or sleeping but those things will only make you feel better for a very short time. What you need to do instead is something contained and contemplative like praying (if you're religious) or meditating.
By centering yourself and focusing on something other than the sh*tstorm that's surrounding you, connect with your higher power. You'll feel better instead of hungover.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)
Your instinct is to just stop trying. You procrastinate, you have trouble making decisions, and you find it hard to stay focused on anything. A better tactic is to phone your mom or a close friend and talk it out. You may have forgotten how much you like to connect with people and how great your communication skills are.
When you do something that always makes you feel better, you'll start to feel as if you have some control of the situation and a different point of view can give you the perspective you need in order to change things.
CANCER (June 21 - July 22)
When you feel overwhelmed, you want to crawl back into your cave and isolate yourself. But what you need to do is the opposite — get out of the house, change your scenery, and allow yourself time away from your problems.
You're not avoiding dealing with them, but give yourself time to handle them when you have a renewed energy.
LEO (July 23 - August 22)
You try to hide it by being more active on social media. You can't be going through a difficult time if you look so happy on Instagram. What you need to do is take advantage of all the people who love you and delegate.
Don't try to handle everything yourself, it will only make things worse. People want to help, so let them. You'll be surprised at how doable everything will be when you have other hands assisting you.
VIRGO (August 23 - September 22)
You tend to bury yourself even further into your work. This practically guarantees that you'll not only be overwhelmed and stressed but that you'll experience burn-out as well. What would be better than working yourself into dust is to procrastinate.
Blow off your work for a little while, let your subconscious have a mini-break, and you'll be amazed at how successfully you'll solve your problems if you fail to recognize them for a while.
LIBRA (September 23 - October 22)
When a Libra is overwhelmed by life, they pretend that everything is great. Eventually, the stress of pretending is too much and they have a meltdown. Instead, why not be honest with yourself and those close to you and admit that you're in a bad way?
Then write down everything that you've accomplished — kind of like an upside down to do list or an "already done" list. You'll be surprised at how much you've achieved, and it will help you to see how much you can accomplish.
SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21)
You want to strike out and make someone else pay for your pain, like the ex who dumped you or your co-worker who stole your idea. But what would actually make you feel better is to make a change: get a haircut, a new tattoo, splurge on a new outfit, or download some music from a musician that you don't have on your playlist.
Sometimes even a little change can help us to feel better and have a more positive attitude.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21)
When you're feeling overwhelmed, you turn it up a notch — you party like there's no tomorrow, you drink, smoke, and hook up with people you normally would pass on. The problem is that this kind of out of control behavior can make things even worse.
What you need to do is be by yourself and be peaceful. Allow yourself time to think your deep thoughts and think about your next move and your place in the Universe.
CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19)
When you're feeling overwhelmed, your whole body gets out of whack. You don't sleep, you don't write, and your ability to focus seems nonexistent. What you need to do is very simple: you need to turn stuff down.
Yes, everyone is depending on you, but you have to put your health and your own well-being first. You can't do everything, nor should you try. "No" is a perfectly acceptable word and no one is going to lose respect for you if you use it.
AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18)
You tend to shut down and are more incommunicative than ever. You tend to keep your feelings to yourself anyway, but when you feel like you might have a breakdown if one more thing happens, you close up. The best thing you can do is to go out and communicate with nature.
You are at your happiest when you're hiking in the woods or having a picnic in a meadow. Let the birdsong be your soundtrack, and the clean air help to heal you. You'll realize that there is beauty in the world, even if it felt like it was coming down around you.
PISCES (February 19 - March 20)
When you're feeling overwhelmed, you just want to curl up in a ball and never leave your bed. You don't answer the phone or respond to texts or messages. What you need to do instead is be grateful for all that you have. There's so much for you to be thankful for, especially when you think of those who aren't as fortunate as you.
It might not seem like it, but in many ways, things are going well for you and it's important for you to acknowledge that. If you express your gratitude creatively, you'll have something to refer to when you feel this way again.
