It seems like empathy is so rare these days, despite being incredibly valuable.

But sometimes, people are naturally more compassionate. And it's during the most uneasy moments where that empathy is helpful. Because when someone uses certain phrases, they can break that tension right away.

People with compassion and deep empathy often use these phrases

1. 'I get why you feel like that, and I see you'

Compassionate people with deep empathy tend to be the voice of reason during arguments. Imagine you're witnessing a tense conversation where an insecure person is distant and cold. They say mean things to push that empathetic person away.

But instead of becoming angry, that compassionate person places a hand on their shoulder and tells them, "I get why you feel that way and I see you." It's their way of offering grace.

When they see someone hurting, they want to do anything to help, even if that person started the argument in the first place. This is the gift of empathy, according to TIME journalist Angela Haupt. "Practiced over time, it changes how you show up in every relationship... it can help you end arguments faster or avoid them altogether," she said.

2. 'I'm sorry'

Those who are truly empathetic won't just acknowledge other's needs and feelings. They will also empathize by taking accountability for the mistakes they made.

Even if the situation isn't entirely their fault, they have no issues owning up to what they did wrong. They recognize the hurt they might've caused, and admit how that mistake made the other person feel. They know how powerful an apology can be, and how much of a difference it makes in tense situations.

3. 'I'm here'

Sometimes, all a struggling person needs is to be told that they're not alone. It's a very powerful thing. In tense conversations that are the result of pent-up emotions, this gives them the validation they need to move forward.

Perhaps an empathetic person and their friend are having a deep conversation about the issues they're currently going through. A compassionate person will listen to their friend and tell them "I'm here."

Empathy doesn't just mean keeping your friend company during hard times. It's physically and emotionally showing up to offer your support, letting them know they have someone to lean on.

4. 'Whatever you need, let me know'

While this could sound like people-pleasing behavior, it's a way empathetic people try to de-escalate a tense situation. They're not caving in to what the other person wants, nor are they admitting defeat. Instead, "Whatever you need, let me know" is their way of offering support.

Imagine that an empathetic person and their friend are in a heated discussion. Maybe it's about their friend facing pressure or having trouble overcoming obstacles. They might not know what their friend needs in that moment, but they still want to do anything they can to make their friend feel better.

5. 'I'm not leaving'

Similar to saying "I'm here," this phrase shows just how deep a person's empathy runs. They're dedicated to being there for someone they love.

Compassion is a deeply-rooted concern for others' well-being and a desire to attend to their needs. Without compassion, the world would be a much colder, crueler place. But by letting other people know that they're physically or emotionally present, it can provide relief.

Empathetic people care about others. They want to lift others' moods and help when they can. That includes reinforcing the idea that someone doesn't have to endure their problems alone.

6. 'We can get through this together'

Sometimes, even empathetic people need to offer support to themselves. "We can get through this together together" is a positive and hopeful phrase they say when they're reassuring someone, as well as making themselves feel better.

Deeply compassionate people who are attuned to others' emotions might mirror the feelings that others are also going through. If someone is stressed, they feel the same. When someone is sad, they may shed a tear or two.
