People Who Are Mentally & Emotionally Uncaring Usually Say 8 Phrases In Casual Conversation
terence b | Pexels Selfishness and narcissistic traits can sometimes urge people to act without empathy.
But uncaring behavior stems from believing that other people will mirror your energy and behavior, as is human nature. They don't trust others or believe they need to be kind. So, while we often demonize uncaring people, and all the phrases they say, they're usually compensating for something.
The phrases emotionally and mentally uncaring people say often in conversations:
1. 'They made that choice for themselves'

Many uncaring people lack the ability to consider how their own actions affect others. They prefer to take themselves out of the equation, so they don't have to take accountability or apologize when they hurt or disappoint other people.
They shift blame away from themselves constantly. The only thing they're interested in considering is their own ease and comfort.
2. 'It's not that big of a deal'
Uncaring people don't consider others, including their feelings. You'll often hear dismissive responses like "it's not a big deal" or "stop thinking so much about it" when someone voices a concern or even vents about how they're feeling.
This dismissive behavior often stems from low emotional intelligence or empathy, but it could also very easily be someone trying to avoid accountability. If they can gaslight someone into believing they're overreacting, they don't have to admit how their own actions and words affect others.
3. 'I figured you wouldn't mind'
Most apathetic and uncaring people are too caught up in their own needs to consider what someone else might need. They're operating in a selfish way, whether it's canceling plans or making a decision that affects someone else without asking them first.
These actions are often rooted in insecurity and a need for control, but their weaponized ignorance, in the form of phrases like "I figured you wouldn't mind," doesn't take away the frustration. People feel valuable and seen when they're considered, but at the hands of an uncaring person, it couldn't be more opposite.
4. 'I don't have the time'
We consider people by creating space for them emotionally and mentally. But sometimes, simply showing up for someone and keeping commitments reminds them that we care. So, you'll often hear shallow excuses from an uncaring person, saying things like "I don't have the time" or "I'm too busy."
Even if they are honest, which tends to be the best route to canceling plans and not showing up, it's clear that they're not willing to inconvenience themselves for the sake of other relationships and people. They expect everyone else to clean up after them, without any acknowledgement of how that feels.
5. 'I'm just an honest person'

If you ever get your feelings hurt by someone, only to hear "it was just a joke" or "I'm just an honest person" in response, they don't care about you. They don't care how they're coming across or what their words do to you, but they clearly do care about shifting the blame when they're called out for it.
It might be narcissism that removes them from any kind of blame or a general kind of emotional ignorance that stops them from considering anyone outside of themselves. But they rarely own up to the backlash of their own immaturity.
6. 'It's not personal'
While everyone could feel a lot better taking fewer things personally, that's not what an uncaring person is referring to when they say something like this. They're actively doing something hurtful and refusing to take ownership of how their own choices affect others.
They're not trying to protect someone's peace or support their big feelings. They're invalidating them to protect their own comfort and superiority.
7. 'You should've told me'
This is a classic phrase for uncaring people, because it's literally an admission that they don't consider others before making choices or acting. They expect everyone else to communicate their needs to protect their own innocence and willful ignorance.
It's easier for them to blame others when their feelings are hurt than to take the time before making a choice to consider how they might harm others by doing something.
8. 'Let it go already'

Someone who prefers not to make space for anyone but themselves tries to gaslight people into overstepping boundaries and moving on when their feelings are hurt. When opening an argument or trying to resolve a conflict requires them to take accountability, they'd prefer to avoid and ignore it.
Even if it seems passive or like a joke in a conversation, casual phrases like "let it go already" are destructive. They urge people to invalidate their own emotions in favor of someone's convenience, which never truly builds any kind of trust or understanding.
