Gen Z, MIllennials, Gen X & Boomers Have Completely Different Ways Of Paying For A Vacation
PeopleImages / Shutterstock Vacations play an important role in pretty much all of our lives. They give us a chance to get away from our daily stressors and hopefully feel like all of our hard work pays off in some way.
Paying for those vacations isn't always easy, and depending on your age, you may go about it differently than someone who is older or younger than you. Many boomers prioritize checking something off their bucket list when planning trips, while Gen X would rather take weekend getaways, millennials prefer planned vacations with their romantic partners, and Gen Z loves spontaneous experiences. Along with those different priorities, their ways of paying for vacations vary widely.
Gen Z, millennials, Gen X, and baby boomers tend to have completely different ways of paying for their vacations
Boomers are the highest spenders when it comes to travel.
They're much more likely to use a credit card to purchase a trip than someone in a younger generation. Nearly 78% pay for travel with credit to make sure they can go on a great trip.

They prefer this payment method because they want to make sure the money they spent on the trip is protected. With a credit card, they can get their money back if there are any fraud issues. And if something comes up before their trip, buying a ticket on credit helps them get their money back if they need to cancel.
That said, they also tend to have more cash reserves than other generations, so they are also likely more confident that those cards will be paid down quickly.
Gen X loves to use miles to pay for their travel expenses.
Gen X knows how to use loyalty points extremely well. They're a generation that really values loyalty, so they’ll get an airline membership card and keep it for life.

While they also rely heavily on credit cards, they accumulate thousands and thousands of miles over the years, just by staying loyal to one company. And, when it's time to book a flight, they don’t even have to worry about spending money. They’ll just use their miles instead.
Millennials are huge fans of using rewards programs.
Millennials have also learned how to work airline rewards programs to pay for their trips. They probably have multiple rewards cards to earn as many points as possible. They know that if they manage the system the right way, they can get a trip for way less than it normally would cost.

They’d rather spend extra time than extra money on a trip, and they love being able to tell you all of the details of how they managed to beat the system.
Gen Z uses a mix of sources to fund their vacations.
Gen Z often has dedicated savings funds and credit card points, but they may also use Buy Now, Pay Later services and accumulate credit card debt.
Unlike boomers, this generation doesn't wait to plan a trip. They like to go as soon as the whim hits them.

When a friend brings up a plan, they'll use any means they can come up with to pay their way. They want to take advantage of opportunities because they have a lot of fear about where the world is going. They're very uncertain about their futures, so having to figure out how to pay the cards back is something they figure they can wait on too.
