People who become meaner as they get older weren’t always mean in the past. After enough bad experiences, they don’t want to waste any more time on things that they don’t think are important.

With age, they also gain the wisdom and confidence to know that they have too much going on in their lives to worry about being nice to people who don't deserve their kindness. Sometimes, they start to prioritize themselves so much that they can no longer handle trivial things most people just deal with every day.

People who get meaner as they get older often refuse to tolerate behaviors others deal with every day:

1. Someone being rude

It’s incredibly frustrating when someone is rude to others right in front of you. Most people don’t want to allow that behavior to happen, but they may feel awkward getting in the middle. People who get meaner as they get older don’t feel that way. They aren’t afraid to snap back at whoever is being rude and tell them to stop.

The friends and loved ones they have around them now are people they want to keep close, and they don’t want them to feel hurt, even by someone else. They have no problem being mean right back if someone gets out of line.

2. Someone being overly dependent on them

People who are too reliant on others typically annoy someone who’s past the point in their life when they care about acting nice. They won’t be able to tolerate someone constantly asking for help.

Overdependency doesn’t only appear when a friend is incompetent. They might be perfectly capable of handling things on their own, but prefer having someone around to help them out. Someone who doesn’t care about being seen as nice anymore won’t let themselves be guilt-tripped into doing something they don’t want to do. They can’t tolerate these kinds of people because they don’t want to get stuck in a codependent relationship. That kind of relationship could force them into becoming a caretaker when that’s not their responsibility.

3. Constant rescheduling

It’s always nice to stick to the schedule you're used to. You’ve already learned the fastest and best way to get everything done. You’ve also probably established what you want and don't want. Because of that, some people hate having to accommodate other people’s schedules.

As people get older, they tend to get more stuck in their ways. If someone is getting meaner as they get older, they're likely becoming more and more inflexible. If someone says they are available but then keeps canceling and rescheduling, they’re not going to try to find another time to hang out. They’ll decide the other person missed their chance and probably won't reach out to them again anytime soon.

Some people feel like they have to be nice, but someone who's not afraid to be mean clearly doesn’t care about that expectation. They won't do something just because they’re supposed to.

Genuinely authentic people who speak their mind don't feel a need to conform. They’ll get frustrated with people who aren’t authentic enough to do the same. It’s not that mean people don’t want to be in a group. The need to feel loved and accepted is part of our biology, and they can’t get rid of that need, no matter how mean they try to be. They’d just prefer to spend time with people who are as authentic as they are.

5. Someone insisting their opinions are facts

People with narcissistic tendencies love to spout their opinions while making them sound like facts. It can be really annoying when someone realizes they’re wrong, but not everyone will say something. If they do, they may try to politely correct them with an explanation about why they were wrong.

People who get meaner as they get older can’t do this. They’ll snap back at someone for acting like that, and they won’t be nice about it either. Since these people are getting meaner anyway, if they are sick of a certain type of behavior, they won't be able to help themselves from making rude comments towards someone who thinks they know everything.

6. Being asked to work overtime

Many bosses take advantage of younger employees by expecting them to work overtime even if they don't want to. Younger employees haven't traditionally felt comfortable pushing back on these kinds of requests, even though that is changing with Gen Z.

People who get meaner as they get older may have given in to that kind of pressure in the past, but now they won’t put up with it. They feel like they’ve already proven themselves, and they’re not going to tolerate a disrespectful boss at this stage in the game, so they’ll directly tell their boss that it’s unfair and that they’re not going to do that.

7. Toxic positivity

People who have become meaner over time aren't super concerned with being positive, and they certainly don't want to sit around and listen to someone else as they spew a stream of what they see as toxic positivity.

They’re not necessarily wrong. It’s normal for people to be biased toward negativity because we think that mindset will be more effective in keeping us safe. Because of that, it’s usually more normal to find someone who’s negative all the time than somebody who’s constantly being positive.

When someone is feeling meaner and meaner, positive people can really annoy them. If someone’s being super chipper early in the morning (or in the afternoon or in the evening), they’ll probably tell them to go away.
