Pretty much no breakup is a good breakup. People can say all they want about everything being mutual, but at least one person is usually hurt. We all want to be loved because it makes us feel happy and connected, which means it's naturally painful when you thought you had it and you lose it.

That’s not to say everyone mourns a breakup the same way. Some people feel genuinely crushed after a breakup. Truly heartbroken people can’t just get over it and move on. They’ll be stuck thinking about it and will make their friends listen to them say the same things over and over.

Mentally & emotionally heartbroken people frequently say these phrases in casual conversations

1. "I guess I should be grateful..."

Love is hard to find nowadays. So many people in recent generations have never even been on a date, let alone fallen in love. There are few lucky people who are able to find it and enjoy a great relationship.

Still, genuine love is what can lead to someone feeling truly heartbroken. You’ll know one of your friends is really heartbroken over someone they cared about if they say, “I guess I should be grateful...”

They know they were lucky to experience what they had. That doesn’t mean their heartbreak isn’t really difficult to get through, though. They know they should be appreciative, but they’re probably too heartbroken to actually do that yet.

2. "Do you think I should call them?"

When you truly love someone, it’s hard to let them go easily. Some people get anxious after their breakup and worry they made the wrong decision. They’ll ask their friends, “Do you think I should call them?”

Backsliding is an easy trap to fall into in relationships. Backsliding is when people go back to a relationship that’s over just because they miss having the other person around. It’s even harder to avoid if someone's been with their partner for years. They're just too used to having the other person around.

Still, their friends need to remind them that they got out of the relationship for a reason. When that happens, it’s best for those heartbroken people to just put away their phones.

3. "It just hurts so bad."

You know someone is really heartbroken if they tell you “It just hurts so bad.” Heartbreak is a weird feeling. Sometimes it can feel like there’s a big hole in the middle of your chest even when nothing's actually wrong with you.

That's because heartbreak mimics the physical feeling of pain. Our brains don’t know how to process everything, and they can’t handle the mental pain, so they may transfer some of that pain into their body.

That’s why really heartbroken people often clutch their chest or feel queasy. They're not just in emotional pain. They're physically hurting too.

4. "I’ll be fine."

Truly heartbroken people don’t want to stay that way forever. Still, they might not be able to get over it at that moment. They might need time to process everything and get through it all. People don’t typically like to see their friends hurting, so many people will try to get their friends out of that funk.

Still, heartbroken people will tell their friends, “I’ll be fine.” It’s them trying to put on a brave face so they can quietly get through it all. They want to avoid their friends pushing them to be excited about the future. They're just not ready to be completely okay with everything yet.

5. "I think I need to stay home."

Some people don’t like to get emotional when they’re around other people. If they’re feeling really heartbroken, they’ll want to go through it alone. They’ll tell their friends, “I think I need to stay home.”

They’re trying to get out of plans so they don’t have to be around other people. They’re likely doing this because they are so heartbroken that they know they’ll cry if they were to go out. Truly heartbroken people will repeat this phrase because they're always struggling to push themselves to do fun things rather than be sad about their breakup.

While it can be good to take care of yourself, people who say this all the time probably won't let themselves get over it. They'll go home and dwell on the situation because there's no one there to stop them, which usually ends up making them sadder.

6. "All love ends eventually."

Love is rare. When people lose it, they sometimes lose their faith in finding love. They could start believing that every relationship will end. They’ll say to their friends, “All love ends eventually.”

They’re stuck in a defeatist mindset because they’re so upset. That’s understandable. Happy emotions naturally fade faster than negative ones. They'll think about the pain of the relationship ending rather than the good times they did have.

That’s why it’s really easy for truly heartbroken people to feel hopeless. They’ll say this to their friends if they’re trying to get into a relationship. They're trying to warn them. It’s not because they’re judging their friends. It’s because they don’t want them to be hurt as badly as they were.

7. "It's better to focus on yourself."

Some relationships are genuinely toxic. They can mess with someone’s head and cause them to have a lot of insecurities. A lot of those wounds stay with them even if they decide to leave the relationship. They could figure out that they’re happier on their own even though they still have to work through the trauma of their last relationship.

They’ll probably be cautious if their friends find a new partner. Their heartbreak might not be because they’re sad they lost the other person. They might be sad that they lost themselves in the relationship. They’ll tell their friends, “It’s better to focus on yourself.”

They don’t want their friend to get hurt as they did. They’re probably also working through everything from the last relationship, so they’re in the mindset of focusing on themselves. They’ll see the benefit because they’ve been focusing on their relationship for so long, but that doesn’t mean everyone has to be in that mindset.

8. "Are you sure they’re being honest?"

It seems like a lot of relationships end because one partner was unfaithful. Cheating on your partner is a major form of dishonesty. Having a dishonest partner can really hurt someone both in the relationship and in their future.

It breaks the trust between two partners, and it can be difficult to get that back. Even after the relationship ends, people who've been with dishonest partners often struggle to trust their partners in the future. It can stop them from getting into healthy relationships with a genuinely honest person.

Seeing how it's affected their ability to trust, they won't be able to trust their friends' partners either. They're so sensitive to dishonesty that they'll ask, "Are you sure they're being honest?" of all their friends.
