The Oscars 2020 was, frankly, a night to remember — it was a star-studded gala whose news stories are still being heard about many days later.
One such story that has now entered the news cycle is the marital status of actor Shia LaBeouf.
The eclectic, sometimes off-beat actor is known for generating controversy no matter where he goes. But this time, the controversy he's generated involves what looks to be the wedding ring he was seen wearing on the Oscars 2020 red carpet.
So, we decided to get to the bottom of it all. Is Shia LaBeouf married?

Let's look at what we know about this possibility.
1. Is Shia LaBeouf married? He reportedly wed Mia Goth in Las Vegas in 2016.
While filming Nymphomaniac back in 2012, he met — and began dating — British actress Mia Goth. They were married in what looked to be a wedding ceremony that was live-streamed from Las Vegas and officiated by an Elvis impersonator. You can see a clip of the live stream below.
2. Officials later confirmed that LaBeouf and Goth only had a "commitment ceremony."
Two days after LaBeouf and Goth live-streamed their wedding, the Clark County Clerk's office — responsible for filing details about all ceremonies performed in Las Vegas — confirmed, via a series of tweets, that the couple only engaged in a commitment ceremony, not an actual wedding ceremony. When asked by fans why the clerk's office decided to take to Twitter to make the announcement, the clerk's office confirmed that it was a "matter of public record" and that they'd received an influx of requests for the details.
3. But LaBeouf insists he and Goth got married.
"The plan was for it to be a private deal. Part of the package, the King Tut package, you get a live stream for free. We get home and it’s like, ‘Woah hey, listen, something changed.' So I called them up and they said, ‘Somebody pressed the wrong button that sends the video to TMZ.’ We’re proud of it. It was love. Dads couldn’t be there so it was kind of nice to have them there in a way,” he said.
4. LaBeouf and Goth filed for divorce in 2018.
Unfortunately, the marriage — whether legal or not — between LaBeouf and Goth didn't last, and a representative for LaBeouf confirmed that the couple filed for divorce back in 2018. "Shia and Mia have filed for divorce. The separation is amicable and all details pertaining to the divorce proceedings will remain private," the representative said in a statement.
5. He was later seen "getting cozy" with FKA Twigs.
As rumors began to swirl about the true nature of LaBeouf's marriage to Goth, and whether they were indeed married in the first place, rumors began to swirl that the actor was "getting cozy" with FKA Twigs. Despite being seen out and about in a few other places, as well, representatives for both LaBeouf and FKA Twigs had no comment about the matter and more recently, FKA Twigs is rumored to be dating The 1975's Matt Healy.
6. Could this all be "performance art"?
LaBeouf is known throughout the entertainment industry for his love of performance art, which is why some fans questioned the validity of his first marriage. It could very well be, then, that the wedding ring he was seen wearing at the Oscars 2020 is yet another piece of performance art by LaBeouf.
