Instagram Nicki Minaj and Kenneth Petty may be headed for the altar. After months of rumors about the couple making everything legal, the “Megatron” rapper told fans this week that the two of them have a marriage license in hand. Rumors about a secret marriage or impending nuptials have been simmering for months but the couple hasn’t confirmed anything until this week. Now Minaj took to the airwaves to tell fans of her Apple music show that she and Petty have a marriage license already. She didn’t spill any news about when a ceremony might be happening (or what she might wear for the event) but it sounds like they are planning to tie the knot sooner rather than later.

1. Checkered past
As we reported here back in January, Petty has some problematic history. He has been on a sex offender registry since he was 16-years-old after he was convicted of raping a teenager in 1995. He also spent time in jail for a manslaughter conviction in 2002. Fans were troubled by his history of violence and got after her about it on Instagram. She had to shut down comments on the first photo she posted of them, but not before taking to the comments section herself to explain the long-ago rape charges. People reports that she said at the time “He was 15, she was 16...in a relationship. But go off Internet. Y’all can’t run my life. Y’all can’t even run y’all own life. Thank you boo.”
2. Full disclosure
It’s not like Petty was trying to hide his past from the singer — she was there for most of it. In January, she took to Twitter to share that she and Petty go way back, saying “...we were like this about each other since we were very young kids in the hood. He was on my body b4 the big ol’ ghetto booty. B4 the fame & fortune. Fought my bf cuz I wouldn’t be his girl. He was always a lil brazy. But anyway, timing is everything.” At the time, she was sure he had changed for the better. A source close to her told US Weekly that “She really believes that he has changed since his troublesome days, but some of her friends are still a bit wary.”

3. Getting serious
Minaj has been hinting around on social media for a while that the two of them were headed for the altar one of these days. In January she tweeted: “He want me to be his wife — his MISSIS like SIPPI NOW.” By March, she was causally referring to him as her husband on her Apple Music show. People reported that she said: “Every night when I get out of the shower, my husband takes this really good lotion that we just bought, and he massages my feet, and rubs them, and he rubs each toe individually, and the heel, and the ball of my foot, and he does it all.” She’s kept the rumor mill busy more recently as well, appearing in concert in an outfit that looked a lot like a bridal look. She posted an Instagram photo showing her backstage of a show wearing a short white veil, white sequin-paneled bodysuit and matching sheer tulle skirt.
4. Professional partnership
The two aren’t just close in their personal lives together; they have started working together as well. Page Six notes that Minaj featured Petty in her music video for the single Megatron. The couple appear on camera hugging in a hot tub and room with neon lights. No word now if they’ll continue to collaborate on professional projects in the future.

5. Marriage license
On her Queen Radio show on Apple Music, the star let her fans know that the two are getting ready to make their relationship official. They have a marriage license and it seems inevitable that a wedding will follow soon after that. Page Six reports that she said: "We did get our marriage license. I think I have what I was striving for, just happiness. It was so hard to get to a happy place. Now that I’m there I don’t want to compromise that for anyone or anything.”

If the two do get married this would be the first marriage for each of them. The singer has alluded to wanting kids in the past.
