But what about the times when it feels like your relationship might be over for good – or, at least, not over yet but on its way out. How do you know he wants to break up rather than try to save the relationship?

It’s very common for us to not want to tell someone what’s wrong, even if they’re a best friend, family member, or romantic partner. You might be able to share just about everything else with your loved ones, but when you’re put on the spot, you might clam up.
Whenever my boyfriend asks me what’s wrong, I have to make an active effort to not say “nothing” and leave it at that. Relationships are about open communication, and I can’t expect my relationship to be healthy if I’m never honest with him.

The same is true for relationships that are already unhappy and unhealthy. If your relationship is on the rocks, now is more important than ever to practice honest communication. It’s also important to note that he may telling you that he wants to break up with you without actually saying the words.
Not all zodiac signs are alike, after all. Some prefer verbal communication, while others prefer physical communication, and that's where they are astrologically strong. When things are good between you two, he may be the type of person to say, “I love you” or “I care about you,” or he might be more comfortable with handholding or spending quality time with you.
This is his love language, and it can vary from sign to sign. Similarly, the way he tells you that he’s not happy in the relationship anymore can vary from person to person. You might already know something is up between you two, but if you want to know for sure, you need to figure out what he’s thinking.
Here’s how to know if he wants to break up, based on his horoscope sign.
ARIES (March 21 - April 19)
You can tell Aries wants to break up when he starts to lose interest in in the relationship. Instead of getting excited about planning something fun for the both of you on the weekend, he starts acting like he doesn't care to do anything.
Aries gets seriously bored when relationships take on a routine. Of course, there's a difference between the daily routine of going to work and the routine of always doing the same thing in your relationship. You'll know he's starting to write off the relationship when he stops trying to get you both out of your boring routine.
TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)
Taurus has infinite love for the people he cares about. There's nothing he wouldn't do for your relationship, including fighting for it even when he knows it's not perfect anymore. You might notice him acting a little down or sad when he's thinking about breaking up because he feels like he's saying goodbye to something good.
Taurus will also start acting more passive-aggressive than usual when he wants to break up. He might be short with you, start arguments over nothing, or act annoyed. Sure, he may be sad about ending the relationship, but there are also reasons why he wants to end the relationship, and showing his anger is his way of proving he's unhappy.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)
Even when you're not around Gemini, you're still "around" him in some way. In other words, he always makes sure that he keeps in touch with you, whether you're sitting on the couch chatting about your day or away from each other for the weekend. Video chats, texting, and phone calls are all very important to making sure you know he's thinking about you.
When Gemini wants to break up, he'll cut down on the amount of communication between you two. This might mean less texts throughout the day or shares less about what's on his mind. He might even want to spend less time together, trying to distance himself from you and the relationship.
CANCER (June 21 - July 22)
Cancer can be a very moody zodiac sign at times, but when he's thinking about breaking up, he can be extra moody around you. Right now, he has a LOT of thoughts going through his mind, and he's not sure how to separate them and handle each one as they come.
When Cancer wants to break up, he becomes an emotional rollercoaster. He might be angry or grumpy one minute and morose or mopey the next. For him, ending something that was once really important to him is devastating. He might over-express his emotions or not express them at all, but you'll know something is up when it's one of these two extremes.
LEO (July 23 - August 22)
When Leo wants to break up, you'll notice that he starts doing more things without you. He might still let you know that he'll be out with friends or that he's going to do some things on his own, but he won't ask you to join him as much anymore.
Leo's friends are always very big influences in his life. If he's thinking about breaking up, there's a good chance he's already talked about it with his squad. You'll know they've influenced whether he should go through with the breakup or not if conversations and arguments between you two always seem to include him talking about what his friends think about the relationship.
VIRGO (August 23 - September 22)
When Virgo wants to break up, he starts to become more critical than usual. Sure, he's always a bit critical, but usually only when it comes to his own life. When he knows the relationship is on the rocks, he'll start nit-picking everything he feels is wrong with it.
Virgo is very perceptive, so he kind of has a knack for finding fault with things that bother him. Right now, the relationship is bothering him – and generally making him unhappy – so by criticizing all of the bad in the relationship, he's making it easier for himself to end things, rather than trying to hold onto the good things.
LIBRA (September 23 - October 22)
When Libra is thinking about ending his relationship, he becomes very conflicted. He doesn't want to stay in a relationship that makes him unhappy, but he's also not the kind of person to outright break up with you when he's still considering it. Libra isn't a fan of confrontation, after all.
He may start fights and be short with you, hoping that you'll stop tolerating it and end it yourself. Libra has a tendency to sweep problems under the rug, rather than facing them head on, so you may have to be the one to initiate the talk about your relationship.
SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21)
Scorpio doesn't open up to just anyone. If you're in his life, he thinks of you very highly and trusts you more than most people. That said, when he's thinking about ending the relationship, he's probably rebuilding that stone wall around himself and shutting you out.
When Scorpio wants to break up, he shuts down around you. In his mind, he no longer trusts you or thinks of you as someone he can confide in. He'll start acting more guarded as a way to distance himself from you and make it easier on himself to end the relationship. It's very hard to get a Scorpio to come back after he's written you off.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21)
When Sagittarius wants to break up, he tries to change things. He thinks that maybe if he tries new things with you that it'll save the relationship, but in reality, he's probably going to go through with the break up anyway.
He may start talking about moving on more often now that he knows he wants to break up. It might not be as obvious as telling you that he wants to move on, but he might tell you that he's considering a new career path, looking for a different place to live, or even talking about new interests or goals you didn't know he had. These are all ways to show you that you don't know him as well as you used to, and that it may be time for you both to move on.
CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19)
When Capricorn wants to break up, he suddenly becomes too busy for you. When everything was going great in your relationship, Capricorn always made time for you, no matter how busy his schedule was. Now, it just feels like he's making excuses to put his work before his relationship.
He'll also become much more serious and no-nonsense Capricorn. Rather than being able to let loose with you and show you his softer side, he's trying to show you that this relationship is over the only way he knows how: by making himself less available to you and more detached.
AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18)
Aquarius has never been one of those zodiac signs who leads with their emotions. He's a very logical, "give me the facts" kind of guy, so when he decides he wants to break up, he's probably using his brain to make the right decision for himself.
Once he decides that the relationship is over, Aquarius will become much blunter and brutally honest around you. If it feels like he's taking your feelings into account less, he probably is. Aquarius tends to shut down emotionally before most zodiac signs, after all. He'll also stop planning things for the future when he wants to break up. Right now, all he's worried about is figuring this out.
PISCES (February 19 - March 20)
Deciding to break up is just as devastating for Pisces as it is for you. He's one of those zodiac signs who will do whatever he can to save his relationship, but he also knows when things just aren't worth working towards anymore. You can tell he wants to break up when he starts becoming much more emotional around you.
Pisces can actually be both sides of the coin when he wants to break up. He can be an emotional wreck, but he can also completely shut down and not deal with his feelings at all. One thing you can count on is Pisces isolating himself from you and any problems he might be dealing with in the relationship when he wants to break up.
