The five love languages are more than just ways to describe what your zodiac sign prefers from your relationships. Your love language is also an important way for you to express how you love others and how you like to be shown love.

How you want to be loved and how you love others may be different, but many of us have the same love language for both. But what is a love language? And how does it help your relationships, if it has the ability to help at all?

Dr. Gary Chapman first released his book, The Five Love Languages, to help people – and more specifically, couples – create deeper, more soulful connections with one another. One size certainly doesn’t fit all when it comes to love, after all.

Each zodiac sign has certain elemental traits and planetary rulers that can influence the way that their horoscope sign gives and receives love when coupled in a relationship.

You can’t expect the method that works for you to work just as well for your partner – and you actively try to learn what your partner’s love language is, too. Maybe your partner likes when you spend time with him and really listen to what he has to say, but you prefer physical touch.

You can’t expect a massage or a hug to be enough for him when he wants to vent, just like he shouldn’t think that letting you talk about your day will be enough to make you happy. Knowing what you need is one thing, but relationships should always be a two-way street.

Once you vocalize your needs (and your love language) to your partner, you need to be just as open to hearing what he needs from you. Listening might not be something you necessarily enjoy for yourself, but it makes him feel loved, so it’s important.

The five love languages are physical touch, receiving gifts, acts of service, quality time, and words of affirmation. Physical touch refers to any kind of, well, physical touch. Hand-holding, pats on the back, hugs, and even physical intimacy are all important parts of this love language.

It can be calming and healing for one, but it can also be one of the most direct ways to connect with someone. Receiving gifts is the love language for anyone who enjoys a tangible, material express of love.

These gifts don’t have to be expensive, but being given something sentimental and thoughtful, and having someone put effort into gifting you something special makes many people happy. Acts of service includes helping someone with their day-to-day responsibilities or even a simple task to make their life a little bit easier.

If you ever feel grateful and touched when someone offers to cook dinner or put the dishes away for you, acts of service may be your love language. Quality time is the love language for anyone who values spending time with the person they love over everything else.

Whether it’s something big like a planned vacation or just grabbing coffee together, the act of being with each other is what touches that person the most. Lastly, words of affirmation includes any verbal expressions of love, like telling someone that you love them or that you’re proud of them.

Whatever your zodiac sign’s love language is, it is an important part of how you connect with others, communicate more effectively, and strengthen your bond with the people you love.

Here are the horoscope signs’ love languages, according to astrology.

ARIES (March 21 - April 19)

You won't lie, Aries, you love a little ego boost every now and then. That's why your love language is words of affirmation. It makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside to hear loving words from someone you care about.

You're a passionate zodiac sign that enjoys physical intimacy, but what really makes you feel loved and special is having your partner be vocal about how they feel about you. It feels a lot more convincing and real to have someone say out loud how they feel about you.

TAURUS (April 20 - May 20)

Your love language is receiving gifts, Taurus. Thoughtful gifts from the people you love touch you deeper than physical intimacy or positive words ever could. For you, having something tangible to keep with you as a reminder that someone cares about you is very meaningful.

You've always been a tangible kind of person, Taurus. Physical intimacy is one thing, but having mementos and "souvenirs" that have emotion and stories behind them are more definitive acts of love in your eyes.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)

You've got so much going on inside that head of yours that it's a wonder you have any time to slow down and smell the roses, Gemini. Your love language is physical touch because, when everything in life seems chaotic or crazy, you know you can always slow things down with touch.

Something small like holding hands or a pat on the back to something big like physical intimacy after a long day at work makes you feel loved from head to toe. Knowing that someone can "tell" you that they care through touch is deeply meaningful to you.

CANCER (June 21 - July 22)

You don't ask for much out of life, Cancer, but you do want to spend as much time as possible with the people you love. Your love language is quality time because there's nothing quite like bonding with your family and friends.

For you, knowing that someone is willing to take time out of their busy schedule to spend time with you – even if it's just to have lunch or video chat with you after work – is proof that your relationship with that person is the real deal.

LEO (July 23 - August 22)

You're another zodiac sign that loves to have their ego stroked, Leo. There's just something about hearing someone boost you up with words of affirmation – like telling you that you're so great and wonderful – that you just can't help but love.

You especially love words of affirmation that describe your talents, personality, and other positive qualities. Knowing that you're being seen in the positive, uplifting light you want by someone you love is very valuable to you.

VIRGO (August 23 - September 22)

You spend so much of your time doing things for others that your love language is for that effort to be reciprocated. Acts of service mean that someone is actually proving that they care about you because you can see it in the length they go for you to be happy.

Even if it's something as simple as being asked, "What can I help you with?" or having someone make you dinner, these little gestures mean so much so much to you – especially as someone who is constantly lending a hand to serve others.
