Since premiering on January 1st, Comedians of the World on Netflix has given viewers a unique perspective of what life is like in different regions of the globe. With 47 comics from 13 areas — including the Middle East, Germany, Australia, India, and more — it’s no wonder people are thoroughly enjoying laughing on their couches. But for those who want to see comics from countries where English isn’t the first language, Netflix provides subtitles for all of these routines.
One routine you want to check out is Franco Escamilla. Known for his dark humor and sarcasm, he’s becoming a household name in his home country. And even though he’s already had a comedy special air on Netflix, being featured in Comedians of the World is well deserved. But don’t take our word for it — watch his stand-up!
In the meantime, who is Franco Escamilla? Here are five things to know about his career and how he got his start.
1. He’s from Mexico.
Escamilla was born in Cuautla de Morelos, but moved to Monterrey, Nuevo León with his mother when his parents separated when he was just 16 years old.
2. He was pursuing another career.
He studied at the Monterrey College of Music and Dance, as well as Criminology. He also worked as a waiter, singer, and worked at local radio stations. Eventually, he started a career in comedy, gaining followers through YouTube.
3. He’s mainly known for his stand-up.
Escamilla earned the nickname El Amo del Sarcasmo, or The Master of Sarcasm, from his dark sense of humor. He hosted his own talk show, El Show de Franco Escamilla, in 2016, which had sarcastic humor and jokes for adults. He also invited other Spanish-speaking actors and comedians onto the show for interviews and to participate in activities.
But he’s also toured all around Mexico and throughout Latin America, performing a world tour for his “Por la Anecdota” show. This tour led to him performing in Japan, Australia, the US, London, Paris, and Barcelona. His success made him become the first comic to perform at the National Auditorium, as well as other venues in Mexico like the Mexico City Arena and the Staples Center.
He’s currently on tour and will perform all over the world, including Hong Kong, Melbourne, Israel, Dubai, Japan, Argentina, Mexico, and the US.
4. He’s also a musician.
He performed at Trovafest in 2016, and performed with Los Caligaris, an Argentinian band, at the Pa’l Norte festival in 2017. He released his debut album, Fe, in June 2017, and recorded an album in collaboration with Edgar Oceransky.
5. And he recently signed to an agency.
In July 2018, Escamilla was signed to the United Talent Agency (UTA), which will help nhim promote his career all around the world, particularly for movies, television, touring, and branding.
