Supermodel Gigi Hadid and singer Zayn Malik are undoubtedly one of Hollywood's favorite celebrity couples. They're young, cute, have mountains of social media followers, and are basically everything you need for the perfect celebrity couple.
Since they started up their relationship back in 2015, the world has been following their romance with vested interest and enthusiasm. Despite their awe-inspiring adorableness and popularity, the couple hasn't come without their more offbeat moments.
So here are some of the more awkward details about Gigi Hadid and Zayn's relationship.
1. Did they break up with their exes for each other?
Gigi and Zayn got together in November 2015. Just three months earlier, Zayn had broken off his engagement to fellow singer Perrie Edwards. "He just wanted to move on and start over in all ways," a source told Us Weekly at the time.
Gigi had also just come out of a relationship. The supermodel had been seeing the middle Jonas brother, Joe Jonas. They broke up in the beginning of November 2015 — the same month that Gigi started her relationship with Zayn. Joe has even commented on how quickly the supermodel moved on. “I think it’s interesting that she moved on so quickly, I mean it was definitely very quick,” Joe said at the time.
2. Gigi appears in Zayn's infamous "Pillowtalk" music video.
The couple's relationship seemed to really heat up after Gigi made and appearance in Zayn's steamy music video for his song "Pillowtalk" in 2016. After the video dropped, the pair continued their romance hype on social media with some flirty tweets.
3. Gigi and Zayn's Vogue photo shoot became one of the most controversial recent magazine covers.
It's hard not to discuss Gigi and Zayn without referencing that particular cover shoot for Vogue. The couple posed for the August 2017 issue of Vogue magazine. However, they immediately received a lot of negativity after the subject of gender fluidity was brought up in their cover story.
The couple's comments about gender and sometimes borrowing each other's clothes sent Twitter into a frenzy. A spokesperson for Vogue eventually released a statement apologizing for the couple's cover story. “The story was intended to highlight the impact the gender-fluid, non-binary communities have had on fashion and culture. We are very sorry the story did not correctly reflect that spirit — we missed the mark. We do look forward to continuing the conversation with greater sensitivity.”
4. Did Zayn cheat on Gigi?
In 2016, rumors started that the singer may have cheated on his supermodel love after a fan account for Zayn posted a photo of him that had never been seen before. After the photo went public, some more tweets responding to it followed by a woman who claimed that the photo was released without her permission. Shortly after, another Twitter account posted screenshots between the singer and the woman who tweeted about the photo, which appeared to be direct messages back and forth between the two. The messages included Zayn calling the woman "gorgeous" as well as the time clearly being seen in the screen grabs, revealing that it was during a period where Zayn was already involved with Gigi.
Fans are divided on the messages. While some think they were completely fabricated, others believe that the messages may be proof that the rumors of the singer's infidelity are true.
5. Zayn bashed Gigi's lifestyle.
The singer once admitted in an interview that he didn't exactly share the same lifestyle interests as his girlfriend. When discussing the 2016 Met Gala that he attended with Gigi, Zayn remarked that, "Now, it's not something I would go to. I'd rather be sitting at my house, doing something productive, than dressing up in really expensive clothes and being photographed on a red carpet.… To do the self-indulgent Look at me, I'm amazing thing on the red carpet, it's not me."
The interview then noted how Zayn corrects himself after noticing that his comments could be perceived as a knock to Gigi. "I get it, and I understand that people gain enjoyment from it," he said.
6. Zayn is close with Gigi's mother, Yolanda.
Zayn has stated that Gigi's family is part of his inner circle, but points out her mother, Yolanda, in particular. "We get on. She's really cool. She's a Capricorn. She's the same star sign as me." The singer even admitted that Yolanda has given him advice. In fact, he once followed her advice and bought a farm, where he and Gigi now own a horse together.
7. Gigi and Zayn broke up in March 2018.
In March 2018, the couple had officially broken up. They both announced it to their fans on their respective Twitter pages. However, a month later, Zayn did an interview with On Air With Ryan Seacrest where he revealed some more about the split. He also confirmed that his song, Let Me, was about Gigi. “I was in love and I think that's pretty evident and I was aspiring to be in love with someone for the rest of my life and the rest of theirs, as we all do,” Zayn said about the song. “Things change and we move forward in life and times change but that’s what I was thinking when I wrote it. … That’s the whole point of life,” he added. “We go through experiences so we have memories and stories and things to write down and contemplate and think about.”
8. Are Gigi and Zayn back together?
In May 2018, only a couple months after their breakup, the former couple were seen holding hands and kissing as they hung out together in New York. The singer was also seen leaving Gigi's apartment in April. The model then posted a photo to her Instagram story, which appeared to have Zayn in it. His face was not visible in the photo, but fans immediately identified his tattoos and hair.
Gigi had seemingly confirmed that the couple were indeed back together after she was seen in July wearing earrings engraved with both her and Zayn's names on them. Some were still skeptical of their relationship status since Zayn was still not following Gigi on Instagram. However, the model quickly shut them down. “My eyes are tattooed on his chest, I don’t need his follow,” she said.
9. Is Gigi and Zayn's relationship real?
Since the couple has gotten together, there's been a lot of speculation that the entire relationship is fake and just a publicity stunt. In fact, there are social media accounts dedicated entirely just to "expose" the falseness of the relationship.
However, it seems as though the couple has finally had enough of the conspiracies. Gigi recently responded to one of the accounts. “Pls stop... It’s just negative,” the 23-year-old wrote. “I really have no hard feelings toward you I just know what a beautiful world there is to go out and live in instead of trying to dissect a relationship between two people that you don’t even know and that you do not see 99% of. This is all just very frustrating and I’m only human... I’ve seen this account for just as long as u,” she wrote. “I’ve just had enough... just because I’m ‘a celebrity’ doesn’t mean I don’t feel, or that my time is too precious to not listen to what people have to say. I’m sure you can see how assumptions like this can be hurtful, especially about someone I love deeply ― if you guys love him too, sooner or later you’ll realize we’re on the same team.”
Zayn also commented, stating that he doesn't want to put a "label" on the relationship. “We’re adults. We don’t need to put a label on it, make it something for people’s expectations,” the “Pillowtalk” singer told GQ in an interview published in June 2018.
Whether the couple is on or off, one thing is for sure — Gigi and Zayn will continue to be one of the celebrity world's most entertaining topics of discussion.
