John Cena and his fiancée Nikki Bella have decided to break up after being in a relationship for six years.

“While this decision was a difficult one, we continue to have a great deal of love and respect for each other,” the couple said in a statement to Us Weekly. “We ask that you respect our privacy during this time in our lives.”

John, 40, and Nikki, 34, got engaged at WrestleMania 33 in Orlando in 2017.

The power couple pulled the chord just weeks before their destination wedding. They were supposed to be married in Mexico on May 5.

The two had very different personalities but made it work for a while before ultimately choosing to go their separate ways.

Though the pro wrestling couple seemed to be a great pair, their relationship hinted of a looming split over the years.

Here are all the signs John and Nikki may have been doomed from their first date:

1. John and Nikki began dating soon after his divorce.

John and Nikki got together the same year he divorced Elizabeth.

The two had been friends for some time and John seemed to want to move on pretty quickly. He asked Nikki on a date soon after he became single.

2. He made Nikki sign a contract before they moved in together.

According to Maxim, John had Nikki sign a 75-page contract before agreeing to live with her.

“I had to have [Nikki] sign an agreement to live in the house. And that’s — it wasn’t a one-page, it’s a 75-page agreement,” he told the outlet.

He claimed the contract was because of his previous marriage and wanted strong boundaries with their relationship. John had a prenup with his ex-wife.

3. John never wanted to marry again — or have kids.

"Look," he said during an interview with Rolling Stone. "I know I cannot handle raising a child. It's like with the dog. My biggest thing to Nicole about the dog was: Love dogs, but I can't contribute to taking care of one."

“I don't have the time. And just because everyone else is happy with children doesn't mean that's how I have to live. I've been upfront about this. I just have things I need to get done.”

John didn’t plan on changing his mind about walking down the aisle or starting a family.

“It's not negotiable,” he continued. “We've been to therapy over it. I don't think it will ever be over with. I'm stubborn as f--k and extremely selfish as well. I don't want kids, I don't want marriage. That's me just saying, 'Hey, this is my life and this is how I'm going to live.'"

And then he proposed to Nikki in 2017.

4. But he never changed his mind about having kids.

Nikki told Us Weekly that there has been some tension in their relationship because she wants to one day be a mother but John has no desire to become a father.

“John doesn’t want to have kids, so it’s taken a lot of therapy to be OK with knowing I won’t be a mom,” she said. “I’m not going to lie, there are times when I still pray that one day he’ll change his mind. But as of now, no family.”

The two discussed the issue in an episode of Total Divas in 2014.

“I’ve told you I don’t want to get married and I don’t want to have kids, and you do want to get married and you do want to have kids," he said. "I feel like there’s a time bomb over my head.”

5. They had trouble making time for each other.

The busy couple has a difficult time making room to see each other.

“We don't get too much time with each other, and it's kind of a way for us to steal a date out of our schedule so I was looking forward to seeing her. I haven't seen her in a few weeks,” John told ET Online. “I've been going around the world and she's been busy as well. I think the gift we both long for is time with each other, so it's both of us consciously carving out a few days to just have the company of each other."

6. Nikki was suspicious of John’s calls.

During an episode of Total Divas, Nikki became suspicious when John immediately went into another room to take a phone call.

When he returned, he said it was a business call but Nikki was not convinced he was telling the truth because he had never done that before.

She was asking John his opinion about some outfits and even tried getting his attention with a sexy piece but he was glued to his phone.

As it turns out, John was just trying to help her sell an apartment and successfully does so.

On an episode of Total Bellas, John and Nikki got into a very serious discussion about their future together after coming across a major disagreement.

"So we really want to call this off?" Bella asked John while holding back tears.

They were able to overcome their problem for the time being.

“I can generalize it in saying in relationships you have points of disagreement and it was a point of disagreement where it seemed like we couldn’t get past it,” John explained on TODAY. “We got past it, and we’re back on.”

8. Nikki’s mom thought she was cheating.

A sneak peek of an episode of Total Bellas had Nikki’s mom, Kathy Colace, convinced she was cheating on John, E! Online reported in September.

"Mom called me," Nikki’s sister, Brie Bella, told her over the phone. "I think she's crazy, but, you know, I have to tell you everything. But, mom thinks you're cheating on John."

The whole misunderstanding was because the preview showed Nikki walking around a hotel with a man in a towel, who turned out to be her brother, J.J. Garcia.

9. Nikki’s sister doesn’t consider John part of the family.

On an episode of Total Bellas, Nikki’s and her sister fight over John’s place in the Bella family.

“I just feel like, when it comes to family, John’s never in the picture,” Brie Bella told her sister. “Like, he’s always gone.”

“My man is part of this family, and I’m pretty much like his wife…” Nikki replied.

“But you’re not his wife,” Brie interrupted.

“You’re gonna be sad about that one day,” Nikki scoffs.

“Why?” Brie asks. “It’s not like she’s ever going to meet him.”

10. The couple pushed back their wedding date.

In October Nikki told PEOPLE that they had changed the wedding date and location due to their busy schedules.

But this delay came just before John announced they were having relationship issues. Could the pair have pushed the date back to try to work things out?

11. John admitted the two hit a rough patch in February.

“I think in relationships, you have highs and lows, and that was an extreme low,'' John said on TODAY. “You have two choices. You either jump ship and start a new relationship or move forward and try to work through it. We're gonna move forward and try to work through it…We haven’t yet jumped ship.”
