Just when you thought the world's premiere coffee purveyor was ready to take it easy for the rest of the year, Starbucks is back out of the gate swinging again with a new line of drinks known as the Black and White Mocha collection, which became available on December 27, 2017 and will remain so through the first week of January 2018, for as long as supplies last.
I think it's pretty safe to say that Starbucks has got the coffee game on lock. I mean sure, there are any number of fancy coffee chains out there, but the number one name in the java game has got to go to Starbucks.
They are ubiquitous, people!
Part of what makes them so successful is their understanding of how people work. Sure, we love caffeine, and sure, we love a routine, but we also like to spice things up and think outside the box sometimes. Well, let's not go crazy here. Nothing too far outside the box. Maybe a grande this time, instead of a tall or something...
And to keep us dangling on their strings, every so often Starbucks releases novelty drinks available for a limited time only.
Remember the pink drink? The unicorn frappucino? A million other options?
The new Black and White collection is meant to conjure up thoughts of people dolled up rocking out as they usher in the New Year.
“The New Year is a time to celebrate,” Erin Marinan from Starbucks beverage development team is quoted as saying on their corporate site. “The Black and White Mocha collection is a festive way to ring in 2018, with a stripe of sparkly chocolate sequins to resemble a black tie.”
In my own mind's eye, I picture this all happening tasteful but cool music, the kind you'd hear in an Apple commercial.
Because Starbucks knows. They knows US. They know how we tick! Who among us doesn't have a standing order they turn to every time they venture inside? Mine is a double tall skim latte, in case you were curious.
In fact, I'd even go so far as to say that the drink you pick from the new collection says a lot about who you are, and you might not even know it!

1. Black and White Mocha
Per Starbucks, here's what you can expect with this drink, a new twist on the old classic of milk meets espresso meets delicious, delicious hot chocolate.
Starbucks' description: "Hot espresso is poured over dark mocha sauce and white chocolate mocha sauce, which is then melted into a wonderfully rich concoction. Steamed milk is added to this silky swirl of dark mocha and white chocolatey goodness to balance the richness. The beverage is topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of sparkly chocolate sequins. Customers can enjoy it hot or iced."
What it means if this is your personal favorite: If this is soon to become your go-to choice for caffeination, it means that first and foremost, you are a trendsetter. You keep an eye on what's happening in the world, including everything to the shoes everyone's wearing this summer to the drinks everyone is sipping all winter.
For all your trend-following passion, you're also pretty old school. Your mom probably taught you Coco Chanel's classic rule, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.”
You know that a little black dress is perfect for every occasion and you're the kind of person who's always wears adorable yet comfortable flats when traveling by air, so sipping on this drink offers you the perfect mixture of trendiness with a nod to classical restraint.
With this cup in your hand, you're twice as likely to be approached by a stranger on the street asking for directions, even though, let's face it — that's something that happens to you pretty much daily anyhow. You can't help it that looking so good lets everyone know how completely you've got this whole "adulting" thing in the bag.
2. Black and White Hot Cocoa
Starbucks' description: "Dark mocha sauce and white chocolate mocha sauce are combined with steamed milk to create rich swirls. It’s finished with whipped cream and chocolate sequins."
What it means if this is your personal favorite: If this tantalizing hot chocolate seems like your cup of, well, hot chocolate, you're the kind of person with the irrepressible spirit of someone who is truly young at heart. You know that drinking coffee is the grown up thing to do, and you'll do it when you have to, but when it comes to treating yourself, you prefer the simple pleasures of childhood.
A fan of this drink isn't just a youthful person, though. They are a creature of comfort. They love the feel of a soft velvet blanket or a warm bubble bath, and if either smells like bubble gum, so much the better! You might sometimes be accused of being too much of a flirt, but can you help it if you need to as if you can touch when you see a man wearing a super soft cotton blend?
You're generally a tad sheepish when it comes to your penchant for the tastier things in life, so the fact that you're brandishing a Starbucks cup definitely puts a little bit more of a stride in your step. After all, not once cell in your body wants to ever be viewed as the most so-called "mature" person in the room.
3. Black and White Frappuccino
Starbucks' description: "The blended beverage is a delicious combination of dark mocha sauce, white chocolate mocha sauce, Frappuccino roast coffee, milk and ice blended together. It’s topped with whipped cream and chocolate sequins."
What it means if this is your personal favorite: If this one is something you just HAVE to have, you're definitely the type of person who aspires to be a Type-A, but who more likely just ends up moving through life at a frantic speed. You don't have TIME for hot coffee! Sure, you make sure to try and take time for yourself and indulge in this whole "self-care" thing, but who has time to meditate when you have a bus to catch in exactly two point five minutes?!
But just because you're busy and a little frazzled, that doesn't mean you don't pay attention to what's going around you.
In fact, it's your observant nature that had you notice this, the most mysterious of the new drinks, on the list. Keep your eyes open and who knows what other tasty treats life has in store for you.

P.S. Never fear. If you fall so madly in love with the drink of yours choice, there is a way to continue ordering it after that "limited time offer" runs out.
