About Maura Matarese

Give sorrow words; the grief that does not speak knits up the o-er wrought heart and bids it break

- William Shakespeare

With over fifteen years of clinical experience, I have dedicated my career as a psychotherapist, author, teacher, speaker and workshop presenter, to help people heal from heartbreak and navigate the stormy seas of complicated relationships. Whether people are struggling with infidelity as either the monogamous one, non - monogamous one, or the "other" in the triangle, are dealing with co-dependency, narcissistic abuse, going through a divorce, or not sure if they want to stay married, I believe people have an inner resource inside of them which I call "Hope". This resource can anchor people through any relationship crisis and help them heal their whole being, from the inside out.

Prior to becoming a psychotherapist, I had a former career as both an actress and television producer, the latter of which I got to work behind the scenes in sports television. I then formed my own production company, where I created documentary films and PSA's (public service announcements) for social causes. I even won a couple of New England Emmys too! As an actor who got to perform in numerous theaters throughout New England, my classical acting training in Shakespeare and the Greeks gave me a unique perspective on human behavior prior to attending graduate school for psychology at Lesley University. Currently, I combine all my professional skills to teach people about the nuanced condition of the human heart and how to live by one of Shakespeare's most important verses: "to thy own self be true".

With that said, I believe there are two developmental milestones people need to achieve in order to feel emotionally fulfilled in their relationships. They are:

  1. Doing their personal best
  2. Following thier hearts

While this may sound overly simplistic, it's not always so easy. People are messy and life is messy.

The good news is, there's a lot people can learn about themselves when they become curious about their "mess" and begin to look inside themselves to understand how it got made. It's why I wrote the book Finding Hope in the Crisis, A Therapist's Perspective on Love, Loss, and Courage, which teaches people about their inner attachment style and how they can heal it, and also started an online school called Finding Hope Self Help and Personal Development, which offers courses to help people heal from heartbreak after relationship loss.

On a personal note, I love life and feel privileged to be alive. For fun, I enjoy spending time with the people I love, figure skating, yoga, traveling, visiting the ocean, and playing with my dogs.
