Some people are really bad at being fake. That's usually a good thing unless they are talking to someone they dislike. In that instance, they can't help but let their true feelings leak into the phrases they say to them in conversation.

These truthsayers can’t put on a face and fake their feelings. They’ll share how they really feel even if it hurts the other person or makes innocent bystanders feel uncomfortable. Simply put, they put the brutal in brutal honesty.

Phrases people who lack the ability to be fake around people they dislike say when talking to them:

1. 'I’m not trying to be harsh'

Being fake to someone can be really hurtful. You’re wasting their time on a friendship you don't value. That's why people who can’t pretend to like someone are adamant about speaking their truth.

They aren't trying to be mean, either. That means they might soften their words with the fact that they aren't trying to be harsh. Even if the comment sounds hurtful, they’re just trying to say their honest opinion, and they truly believe it benefits everyone. S

2. 'I didn’t know you’d be here'

People who can’t pretend to like someone choose not to be around the people they don’t like. They know that if they do, they’re going to be mean. But just because they don’t like someone doesn’t mean they want to hurt their feelings. They’d probably just rather not interact with them at all.

They’ll probably still accidentally run into whoever they don’t like, though. They’ve probably had to interact with them in the past and experienced or seen something they disagreed with. When this happens, they’ll tell that person, “I didn’t know you’d be here.”

3. 'I don’t need to give you an explanation'

We’re all expected to act nicely when socializing with others. It’s an unwritten rule that makes people uncomfortable when broken. People who can’t pretend to like someone don’t care about living up to that expectation. In fact, they don't worry about conflict as long as they are being true to their feelings.

They know it will make people uncomfortable, but they’re confident enough in themselves not to care. They validate their decision internally rather than waiting for people to validate them because that’s probably not going to happen. If they’re asked why they can’t be nice, they’ll stand firm in the fact that their reasons are their own. They trust themselves and don’t feel the need to seek other people‘s approval.

4. 'Don’t talk to [my friend] that way'

People who are unable to fake their feelings won’t stay quiet if the person they dislike is mean to their friend. They’ll happily put them in their place. Although it makes some people uncomfortable, they aren’t afraid to put themselves in the middle.

If that’s what their friend needs, they’re happy to do it. They’ve already shown they aren’t afraid to break social pleasantries. Especially when there’s a justifiable reason to act mean, they’re fine snapping back at someone.

Most people grew up hearing the phrase “if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” People who can’t act fake take this advice to heart, which leaves them unable to speak to people whose company they don’t enjoy. Whenever they run into someone they don’t like, they’ll remove themselves from the situation.

They’ll either straight up ignore the other person and walk away or simply say "see you later" as a way to get out of interacting with them. They’re not trying to be mean. They’re probably trying to keep the peace by walking away. They know they don’t have anything nice to say, and they’re not going to force themselves to think of something. They’ll stick to saying nothing at all and keeping their distance.

6. 'You weren’t invited'

If you don’t like someone, chances are you won't invite them to a party. Nice people typically try to make an excuse for why someone wasn’t invited. They don’t want them to feel excluded. People who can’t pretend to like someone won't take those feelings into consideration.

They don’t want to give the wrong impression and have the other person assume that there will be a next time. While one of their nicer friends might say, “I’ll make sure to invite you next time,” these people would probably straight up say, “You weren't invited.” They’re telling them there was no mistake. They just don’t like them enough to invite them.

7. 'I don’t think we have much in common'

Groups usually form and bond over a common interest. People with shared hobbies or backgrounds tend to hang out because it gives them a place to feel accepted. They can talk about all the things they want to talk about and don’t have to focus on what seems unnecessary. Those conversations probably wouldn’t be as satisfying to them.

That’s why people who can’t pretend to like someone avoid others whose interests don’t align with their own. There’s nothing they can connect with them about, and so there’s nothing to really like them for. They’re not going to hide behind some excuse. They’re going to be honest about why they don’t want to hang out with them.

8. 'It’s not you, it’s me'

People who don’t act fake aren’t afraid to speak their mind. They aren’t going to hide behind pleasantries or anything else. They’ll say exactly how they feel because they can’t act any other way.

They’ll acknowledge that it’s their inability to put up with the person they don't like, and own it. They’ll tell the person, “It’s not you, it’s me.” They take responsibility for their actions because they don’t want to act obliviously either.

They let the other person know it’s not that there’s something inherently wrong with them. They’re just not the kind of person they like to be around.
