People With Low Mental & Emotional Depth Usually Say 9 Phrases In Casual Conversation
Vitaly Gorbachev | Pexels Conversations can become unpleasant with people who have low emotional and mental depth because they're unapologetic about their feelings.
These more shallow people tend to use certain phrases that can annoy and turn off others. A person like this likely has low emotional intelligence, starting problems and having emotional outbursts.
Phrases people say when they have very low mental and emotional depth:
1. 'I don't care'

Someone who uses this phrase not only lacks depth, but has no empathy. They struggle to show emotion towards other people. If they say something that hurts someone's feelings, they don't bother to apologize. Sometimes, they don't realize they said anything wrong in the first place, but disregarding feelings is normal for them.
This can lead them to have the same outlook in their own lives. They may not bother to make changes because they don't have the depth to acknowledge and then put in the work. Nothing seems important to them, except pleasing themselves.
2. 'I say it like it is'

It takes emotional intelligence to meet people where they are. Having compassion means holding your tongue, even when you want to speak your mind. But someone with no depth struggles with this. They see things in black and white and will say what they think, regardless of how it would make someone else feel.
They may claim they're just being brutally honest and telling people what they need to hear, but this isn't a good way to win people over. Showing up for others in an open way is essential for creating connections. And when someone pretends they're being helpful by "saying it like it is," they push people away.
3. 'I'm not going to apologize'

Apologizing isn't always easy. It's hard to look at our own behavior and admit when we're wrong. While people with emotional depth take the time to understand their mistakes, those who lack it find it hard to own up to it.
Instead of having a mature, thoughtful conversation, they deflect or refuse to apologize. It shows how little they care about maintaining their relationships.
People can't always see past their own egos. It takes emotional intelligence to let our guard down and apologize. Some people will never say sorry, caring more about themselves because they can't put their pride aside.
4. 'I don't need anyone else'

When someone says "I don't need anyone else," it's obvious that they're trying to look tough. We all need human connection, whether we want to admit it or not. Some people, however, lack the depth to form solid relationships.
They may not realize they have this problem, or they may be sure they don't need companions because of their ego. But our relationships impact every aspect of our lives and our bonds help us live longer. When someone claims they don't need anyone else, they're lying to themselves.
5. 'I hate that'

While it's important to keep our expectations realistic and not give in to toxic positivity, it can still be beneficial to look at things with an open mind. Often, people who lack depth struggle to understand things they can't relate to. They jump to negativity because they only see the world through their own perspective.
This type of person can't put themselves in other people's shoes to understand things. Instead of digging deep and trying to understand, they throw out the phrase "I hate that" about every little thing.
6. 'Why do you have to make everything so deep?'

Deep conversations bring people together, and vulnerability allows for close connection. But when someone has no depth, they likely avoid these types of conversations because they lack the skills. It makes them uncomfortable because keeping things surface-level is safe, while digging deep is scary.
Deep listening builds trust and intimacy, which someone with low depth will avoid. They don't trust anyone or fear forming a strong connection, so they'll resist. When someone tries to dig deep, they'll pull away.
7. 'I don't want to talk about that'

Small talk is often an icebreaker that allows us to get to know people and eventually form deeper bonds. But both people have to be willing to be a bit vulnerable and go deeper.
When you get to know someone and can tell something is bothering them, a shallow person may say "I don't want to talk about that." They'd rather gloss over it or not bring it up at all. This harms relationships, especially those with people who want to grow closer.
8. 'It is what it is'

Someone who lacks empathy will try to invalidate others by saying "it is what it is." Instead of approaching situations with an open mind, they'd rather not think about them. What they may not realize is that they are ending conversations before they even start.
Deep conversations are outside of their comfort zone, so they'll dodge it, making themselves and other people feel bad. We need vulnerability to think deeply and work through a complicated situation. Using this phrase is an easy way to pass blame and avoid depth.
9. 'Why do you make things so complicated?'

People who aren't interested in getting deep with themselves or others might find everyday conversations complicated. Sometimes, a simple "How are you today?" can push them over the edge. Likely, it's because they're dealing with complex emotions they refuse to acknowledge.
They want people in their lives to keep things light and surface-level. It keeps them from feeling overwhelmed. Avoiding a difficult conversation is what they care most about.
This isn't a healthy way to live. We need to have people in our lives we feel comfortable venting to. Someone who is trying to get deep with you isn't trying to make things complicated, they're just hoping to form a stronger connection.
