Every generation has different things they value in the workplace, from how to be a hard worker to what counts as a real job.

At the most basic level, a job is work someone does for money. But the specifics of what makes a job legit aren’t the same for each age group that’s in the workforce now.

Older generations tend to think of jobs as more of an official institution than younger ones do.

Over time, people have changed their minds about how important it is to have a true career that allows them to climb the ladder in their industry. For older generations, jobs are meant to be strict and organized, while younger ones see them as a means to an end.

Boomers believe that real jobs come with recognizable titles and heavy responsibilities.

The baby boomer generation is full of hard workers. A strong work ethic has always been important to them, which definitely influenced what they consider to be a real job.

They didn’t have the opportunity to work remotely when they joined the workforce, so they generally believe that’s the mark of a real job. They question anyone who doesn’t put in long hours at the office and make it their mission to get that next promotion.

Boomers have gravitated towards pretty traditional career paths people have heard of before over more creative options. They’re not against innovation, though, with many boomers starting successful businesses. The bottom line for them is that a real job requires sacrifices, and they’re willing to make them to get ahead.

Gen X likes to do their own thing, so they don’t feel like they have to follow conventional career paths to have a real job.

Gen X might be the most independent generation because of the way they were raised, and they carried that attitude with them to the workforce. They want to be in control of their work and are always focused on getting results.

They differ from boomers because they’ve been much more accepting of remote work. This has given them some new career options boomers would have scoffed at because they aren’t as traditional and well-known.

The biggest thing Gen X values is work-life balance. They don’t consider all-consuming careers to be the only real jobs when that doesn’t fit what they want for their lives. As long as a job is respectable and lets them support themselves, it’s real to them.

Millennials don’t really think about how real a job is as long as it lets them meet their goals.

Millennials have built on the push for greater autonomy and balance that started with Gen X. They appreciate having the chance to advance their careers, but that’s not really their biggest priority. Instead, they want to do work that feels meaningful and also allows them to live the life of their dreams.

The idea of some jobs being more real than others came into question with millennials. They love remote opportunities and don’t mind non-traditional options, even if older generations would look down on them.

Millennials are also known for taking care of their mental and physical well-being. If a job gets in the way of that, it’s not going to appeal to them. They might not go so far as to call it a fake job, but it’s definitely not one they think is worth their time when they don’t want their lives to revolve around work.

Gen Z thinks anything that pays the bills is a real job, regardless of the specifics.

Gen Z values flexibility more than any other generation. They don’t want to sit in an office for eight hours a day when they know they don’t have to. Interestingly, Gen Z actually cares about enjoying their work so much that they’re willing to take a pay cut to do so.

In case that didn’t set them apart enough, they also don’t stick to the career options their parents are familiar with, like doctors and lawyers. They’re very involved in side hustles and freelancing. Some people might think that kind of work doesn’t count as a real job, but they don’t see it that way.

Gen Z has watched people around their age become super successful just from posting on social media. They don’t think that’s any less of a job because it doesn’t come with a boss or benefits. They’re very open-minded and love leaning into their creative side. That’s not fake to them.
