Sarah Hyland's 14-year-old cousin was killed in an alleged drunk driving accident in Nebraska over the weekend.

Trevor Canaday and his father were allegedly hit by a drunk driver Saturday evening. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital where Trevor was pronounced dead. Hyland broke the news to her fans via her Instagram story Sunday.

"This is my 14-year-old cousin Trevor. Yesterday, he was killed by a drunk driver. My Uncle is still in the hospital in need of more surgeries," the post read, accompanied by a photo of the teen.

Trevor and his father, Bryan, were "driving to a show choir event and were involved in a serious car accident due to a drunk driver," according to a GoFundMe page organized by his mother, Becky, and sisters, Tessa and Zoee.

"Bryan, is recovering physically, but sadly Trevor has gained his wings and is singing and playing some crazy football in heaven," it continues.

The man, who Hyland identified as Jeffrey Eggeling, "hit my Uncle's car so fast my cousin (who was wearing a seatbelt) was ejected from the car," she said on her Instagram story, adding that the driver "tried to RUN from the scene of the crime."

Eggeling ran a red light and collided with the Nissan Maxima Trevor and his father were in, according to the Omaha World-HeraldHe got out of his 2011 Ford Escape and tried to flee on foot. Eggeling has two prior DUI's and is being held at Douglas County Jail, records show.

"I hope to God he spends the rest of his life in prison," the Modern Family star posted.

Trevor was loved by many. On Monday, students at Millard South High School wore red, pink, or cornhusker in memory of Trevor, who was a freshman on the school's football team. His football team's Twitter page posted a tribute to the boy, expressing its condolences to Trevor's family and friends.

The GoFundMe page for Trevor aims to cover funeral expenses and allow Trevor's family to grieve the loss of their loved one without monetary worries.

"Trevor was a funny, smart, innovative, athletic, goofy kid and he was so loved," the page reads. "His memory will live on in many ways. Please help us do this for the family now to help ease their suffering away from money to focus on healing emotionally."

Over $29,000 has been raised in just one day, exceeding the $25,000 goal.

"The amount of love, condolences, and donations we have received is uncanny," the latest update on the GoFundMe page says. "Trevor truly was a very special boy and was so so loved. Thank you everyone for the constant donations. We have reached our goal to cover Trevor’s funeral expenses, which is unbelievable in many ways...Thank you all for this support and please keep spreading the word and sending happy thoughts."
