Unfortunately, it’s pretty common for people to fall in love with the wrong person, especially when they’re used to dysfunctional relationships.

It’s sad to see men get stuck in the cycle of falling for the wrong woman repeatedly. When this happens, it usually means they’ve developed some unhealthy habits that are holding them back.

When men fall in love with the wrong woman over and over, it’s probably because they can’t shake these sad habits

1. They become obsessed with her potential

Most people want to see the best in others, but that can quickly become toxic in romantic relationships. One reason men fall in love with the wrong woman is that they’ve created a mental image of the person she could become, and they can’t let go of that idea.

The problem is her potential isn’t the same thing as reality. She could grow into that person over time, but a man can’t make her change if she doesn’t want to. In this case, it’s almost like men fall in love with an imaginary friend of their own making.

2. They always have an excuse ready for her distance

Instead of just accepting that a woman isn’t interested, these men make excuses for why she’s not acting the way they would expect someone to when they’re in love. There’s always a good reason she’s pulling away that she’ll get over eventually.

Couples can’t possibly be happy when their relationship is built on excuses rather than truth. This would leave a man waiting for something that’s never going to happen while the woman wishes he would take a hint.

3. They think their pain is a sign of their love

Technically, physical pain is closely linked to social hurt, so there is a chance that love could cause some very real pain. That’s not what should define a relationship, though.

Every couple will have their ups and downs, but being in a constant state of pain isn’t normal. Sometimes men confuse their emotional suffering as a sign of the strength or depth of their passion. But healthy relationships lead to more happiness than hurt, and they’re clearly not experiencing that.

4. They can’t let go of the good memories

When men keep falling for the wrong woman, they probably aren’t focused on the present as much as they should be. Instead, they’re living in the past. They refuse to acknowledge the problems they have right now because things used to be good.

Thinking about good memories not only makes people happier but also decreases their stress levels, so it’s not surprising that people lean into nostalgia. There’s no reason to fight for the past when it’s wildly different from the present, though.

5. They make a big deal out of small things

These men are more likely to blow things out of proportion than others. When a woman does something nice that’s really small, they cling to the hope that it means she’s changing her mind.

The truth is, a lot of people are just nice, especially when they’re trying to let someone down gently. A single text or a short conversation shouldn’t be taken as a sign that things are going to work out. Relationships need consistency, not a few good moments here and there.

6. They think love is something they have to earn

What men believe about how love is given and received will impact their relationships in a big way. Anyone who grew up in a family that turned love into something conditional will have a hard time setting that aside when they fall in love as an adult.

If a man really does believe love is something that he has to earn, it won’t seem like that big of a deal to put up with a woman who’s giving him nothing. He’ll think he just needs to work harder instead of understanding that nothing he does will change the fact that she’s not right for him.

7. They feel like they have to save her

Despite what some movies and books might lead us to believe, women aren’t damsels in distress who are waiting for a man to come and save them. That truth doesn’t really affect anyone with a savior complex, though.

These people feel a need to solve other people’s problems. It’s easy to see how a man with a savior complex would come to the conclusion that he needed to save the woman he loves. Her disinterest is just another thing he can fix if he tries hard enough.

8. They never say they’re done

Even when men take a step back from the wrong woman they’ve fallen in love with, their mindset will influence whether or not they can let her go. In other words, men who hold onto some hope that a woman will change her mind aren’t really putting an end to the relationship.

Some relationships just can’t be saved. Really, that’s the way it’s supposed to be since not every couple can be soulmates. By leaving the door open, these men are just hurting themselves.

9. They keep up with her when they should be moving on

Maybe a man does have good intentions and wants to move on with his life instead of continuing to fall for the wrong woman. That’s not going to happen if he keeps looking her up on social media or finds reasons to talk to her friends, though.

Really moving on from a relationship requires people to distance themselves from each other. They can’t have just one foot out the door. He’ll never break the cycle if he keeps her in his life like that.
