People Who Are Mentally & Emotionally Drained Usually Do 8 Things Every Night After Work
Inside Creative House / Shutterstock How many times have you come home from work completely exhausted? For most of us, it's a daily occurrence. If you work in an especially stressful industry or stay up way too late to meet deadlines, functioning the next day can feel impossible.
Putting too much effort into a career and not into a personal life can lead to serious burnout. It’s hard to combat this because after work, you likely lack the energy to hang out with friends or invest in your hobbies. While it’s hard to unwind after an exhausting day at work, some people have found ways to relax at night. Often, it’s nothing crazy. Little routines like putting on comfy clothes the second they walk into the house or waiting to turn on the TV until they’ve had real quiet time can help you blow off steam after a stressful day.
Mentally and emotionally drained people tend to do these things every night after they're done with work
1. Enjoy true quiet time

After a stressful day of socializing and attending meetings, quiet time may be their priority. It’s not easy to be available to everyone all the time. Constant voices and being pulled in different directions can drain someone quickly. Instead of jumping straight into more stimulation by turning on the TV or chatting with friends, unwinding in silence can be soothing.

Constant voices and being pulled in different directions can drain someone quickly. Instead of jumping straight into more stimulation by turning on the TV or chatting with friends, unwinding in silence can be soothing.
Embracing silence is good for both our mind and body. It lowers blood pressure, decreases heart rate, relieves muscle tension, and increases focus. These things are stretched thin when we are exhausted and stressed out.
2. Change out of their work clothes immediately
I don’t know about you, but I don’t understand how some people can stay in jeans when lounging at home. The second I walk in the door, sweatpants are going on. I refuse to be uncomfortable for even a second in my own home. This is a great tactic to use when you’re exhausted after a long day of work. There is something so relaxing about putting on comfy clothes.
For some, dressing comfortably helps them function better. Most fabrics deemed appropriate for work are uncomfortable, especially for people with sensitive skin. Sometimes, ditching the outfit altogether can help you relax after a long day.
3. Mindlessly scroll on their phones
When you’re caught up at work, there is no time to scroll social media. After a long day, many people choose to catch up with what they missed earlier. This might mean lurking on friends or simply opening the TikTok app for entertainment. While screen time is often looked down on, it can be relaxing for some people, especially when they’re drained after a long day.
One study found that while some people doom-scroll, focusing on negative things and losing track of time, others choose dopamine-scrolling. This can boost mood and help form healthy schedules. This can be not only entertaining but also beneficial for some people when they are feeling drained.
4. Vent to a friend

After a bad day at work, it can help to vent your feelings to a close friend. They’ll give you the space to not only manage your feelings, but also get them off your chest. Whether it was a run-in with your boss or an overwhelming project that drained your energy, sharing with someone can relieve stress.
This isn’t just a positive way to relieve stress. It can also make friendships stronger. A study conducted at UCLA found that venting your frustrations to a friend doesn’t necessarily erase your frustration, but when done correctly, it can take some of the weight off your shoulders and help you connect with people you trust.
5. Order takeout
The last thing I want to do after an exhausting day is cook dinner. If my energy is depleted, the only place I want to be is on the couch. People who feel especially drained after work might have the same mindset. Grabbing takeout on the way home or ordering through delivery apps can be an easy way to make sure you’re fed without dirtying your kitchen.
Takeout can be more than an easy way to eat dinner after a long day. It also feels like a reward. Who doesn’t want a reward after a day at work? You earned it!
6. Put off tasks for the next day
The sink might be full of dishes, and the floor could use a good vacuuming, but those things have to wait. Cleaning after a hard day at work can feel like torture. It’s exhausting to clean your home on a good day, let alone after work has completely depleted your battery.
Our jobs can take a lot out of us mentally. Sometimes, it can lead to depression, which can completely ruin our motivation. Instead of being productive after work, lounging around feels like the only option.
7. Collapse on the couch

Work can lead to serious burnout. When we over-exhaust ourselves, it can be hard to focus on anything else. The best option when we get home is to collapse on the couch. All we want to do is rest and turn on the TV, or scrolling while lying down can support that need.
Burnout is driven by long periods of stress without proper time to recover. This can drain your energy. Often, your body is running on empty and is desperately trying to tell you to relax. In a world where we feel like we always have to be productive, it can feel lazy or a waste of time to chill out on the couch. When you’re burnt out, that’s exactly what you need.
8. Turn their phones off
There is something liberating about turning your phone off, especially when you've spent all day making yourself available to everyone else. We can be so distracted by our phones that the only true escape is to shut them down. The stress of checking your email or responding to a coworker is gone.
Even one hour with your phone off can transform your sleep quality and stress. Overusing our phones often makes us more stressed, especially when you’re making yourself available to your co-workers or clients. It’s important to truly clock out and take time for yourself at the end of the day.
