getty Patty Murray has served as U.S. Senator from Washington since 1992, becoming the state’s first female Senator. She’s the fourth highest ranking Democrat, as well as the highest-ranking woman in the Senate! And once she became the Senate Assistant Minority Leader in 2017, she became the third highest-ranking Democrat. How’s that for girl power?
Since becoming a Senator she’s served on multiple committees, and has even chaired some of them. She serves on the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, and chaired the Senate Budget Committee, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and was co-chair of the U.S. Congress Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction.
In her 26 years in Congress, she’s introduced legislation to help victims of rape, including the Emergency Contraception Access and Education Act, which would “require hospitals that receive federal funding to provide rape victims with emergency contraception.” She’s also an advocate for health care, introducing an amendment to a bill that would have required “health insurance plans to offer contraceptive coverage to patients regardless of employers’ beliefs, religious or otherwise.”
Though that bill didn’t pass, she’s worked with her Senate colleagues to pass the FDA Safety and Innovation Act, introduced legislation to ensure drug and medical devices are specifically labeled and proven safe for children, authored the original authorization for poison control centers nationwide, and has supported bills to expand health care, particularly with treatment and prevention programs.
