The day after the 2018 midterm elections, President Trump announced that he asked Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign. Though it comes as no shock, seeing as how the AG and president had a highly contentious relationship, his appointment of Matthew Whitaker, the Chief of Staff to Sessions, is considered a controversial replacement.

The controversy stems from the fact that Whitaker was appointed without Senate confirmation, and he has openly criticized Robert Mueller’s ongoing Russia probe.

He’s made many statements over the last few years, saying things like, “The truth is there was no collusion with the Russians and the Trump campaign” and “The left is trying to sow this theory that essentially Russians interfered with the U.S. election, which has been proven false.” He’s also called the investigation a “lynch mob” and the probe “political.”

Many have called for him to recuse himself from overseeing the Special Counsel investigation, but he’s also been at the center of legal battles. Before he took office, World Patent Marketing, a firm Whitaker worked for, was fined $26 and shut down for deceiving consumers. Allegedly, the company scammed veterans out of their life savings.

It’s also suspicious the president claimed just last month, “Matt Whitaker’s a great guy. I know Matt Whitaker," but backpedaled last week, saying, “I don't know Matt Whitaker.” Whitaker has been seen visiting Trump in the White House at least 10 times, according to Vox.

Before being appointed as “interim” Attorney General, he was an attorney during the Bush Administration, was the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa, and ran in the 2014 Iowa Republican primary for a seat in the U.S. Senate.
