Who is Sutton Tennyson? The 37-year-old former fiancé of Growing Up Hip Hop's Angela Simmons was shot and killed in Atlanta this weekend. 

Tennyson was found dead in an open garage at an Atlanta home after the Atlanta Police Department responded to a call of shots fired around 5PM on Saturday, Nov. 3. According to police reports, Tennyson died of multiple gunshot wounds after shots were fired when an altercation with an as yet unidentified suspect escalated.

The case remains under investigation by the APD’s homicide unit. Meanwhile, Simmons, 31, is grieving the loss of her former fiancé. 

"I'm hurting. I'm numb. Thank you for the out pouring [sic] of love everyone," she captioned an Instagram tribute to her late ex. "I can't believe I'm even saying rest in peace Sutton."

As more details about the tragedy continue to emerge, here are 5 things to know about Sutton Tennyson and the circumstances surrounding his death. 

1. The suspect fled the scene 

According to a preliminary police investigation, Tennyson had been talking with another man, who has yet to be publicly identified, when the conversation escalated and shots were fired. The suspect shot Tennyson multiple times before fleeing the scene by car.

2. He and Simmons shared a son 

The couple's son, Sutton Joseph Tennyson, was born in September 2016. Following the news of her former fiancé's death, Simmons shared multiple posts on Instagram of her son and his late father.

"Thank you for leaving behind my greatest gift," she captioned her first tribute, featuring multiple snaps of the father and his two-year-old son.

3. He proposed to Simmons in 2016 

Simmons announced her engagement to Tennyson back in April 2016, a few months before she gave birth to the couple's son. "YES!! I couldn't be more excited. This is only something I could of only dreamed of," she captioned the Instagram announcement: a video showing off the sparkly solitaire engagement ring. "I'm over the moon and feeling so blessed to be able to share my life with the one I truly love. Everything happened in the most perfect way."

4. The engagement ended in 2017 

Late last year, Simmons took to Instagram to announce she would be beginning the new year as a single mother. "2017 ... You were a beast. I can truly say that this year has made me stronger. I recognized my strength to walk away from what isn't healthy for me. I faced my biggest fears this year. And from that I am open to my new life and evolving. I truly have seen and been through some stuff that I know tons of women go through," she captioned the post, possibly alluding to the cheating rumors that surfaced during the couple's engagement.

"All of those who are single mothers that are hurting that want to give up...Don't ! Also don't stay somewhere that you aren't valued. And don't allow anyone to treat you less than what you are," she continued.

5. Tennyson had a history of legal trouble 

Following the couple's engagement in 2016, Bossip reported that Tennyson was "a convicted felon" who landed in prison back in 2000 for carrying a concealed gun. The site also reported that Tennyson later returned to prison on multiple charges including credit card forgery, identity theft, drug possession, and police obstruction before his release in 2010.
